Noisy gearbox/drive line

Postby cat007 » Mon May 06, 2013 11:12 am

Hey all

Last week I jacked all 4 corners of my car up to replace my rear gearbox seal.

While it was up I ran the car in gear, through all gears, to get the oil moving around in the gearbox and see if the new seal was doing it's job.

I noticed what appeared to be an alarming amount of drivetrain/gearbox noise in all gears.

The gearbox is a W55 with unknown km's. It changes pretty nice - and there doesn't appear to be a large amount of noise from it when you're driving - although I'm sure my exhaust is drowning some of it out.

The noise I heard wasn't grinding or whining or anything bad - just sounded like loud drive train noise. Perhaps it's perfectly normal - who knows. Maybe I should jack her up again tonight and record it (my car, not the misses).

Anyway - perhaps there's someone on here who can recommend an additive to shut a W55 up a little bit?

Cheers

Im pretty certain the w55 takes a GL4 oil, not that Im saying that will be what is making the box noisy, but still, best to run the proper oil anyway.

Yeah - here's a good article:

http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Transaxle_oil.pdf

BNT want $44 per quart for MT90 - OUCH.

Any MT90 hookups on here?

Yeah, its not cheap by any means, but well worth the investment I think.

TM vendors sell it slightly cheaper sometimes, but then freight puts it up to the same price unless you buy in bulk.

A lot of cars will make a hell of a noise with no load on the drivetrain. If it doesn't do it on the road then don't worry too much about it.

There's nothing wrong with it. That's normal.

You could try it again with the handbrake on a couple of notches for a few minutes to give it some load.

They are noisy, full stop. Just blocked out inside the car when driving. Even brand new cars would be noisy if chucked on a hoist and ran through the gears 8)

Make any rumbling or whirring when idling in neutral, that disappears when disengaged- clutch pushed down?
Any noise disappear if you move the clutch fork a few mm?

Like i said on SCONZ, people fizz over the Royal Purple stuff for the V160's so must be OK for W series boxes.

STA Parts out the airport have this for about $18-$20/litre... at least was when i got my stuff about 4 years ago!
