Diff 'sticking'

Postby cat007 » Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:24 pm

Hey all

just pulled the diff from my supra as it was making some noises.

I thought it sounded more like a preload problem - and could still be - but the symptoms out of the car make me think it's a bearing issue.

Turning the input flange it's 'very' hard to start it turning. Once it's turning it's very rough. Seems fine when turning either side individually. But when turning the front it's quite rough.

I'm assuming this is a bearing up the front that's perhaps gone dry (long motorway (ahem, I mean race track) pulls could be starving the front bearing)?

Is anyone on the shore around this afternoon/evening to come give a quick diagnosis? I'm careless at the moment so can't come to you....

Without pulling apart is difficult to diagnose but you are probably on the money the bearing is worn. I wouldnt think because of pulls on the motorway tho. Just the nature as it wears out. Have a new set put in. The preload shouldnt be wrong unless you have recently replaced them and incorrectly set the clearance between cup and cone.

I pulled my diff as I was repairing the subframe, took it in to get re shimmed as it was fine but lsd didnt do much, no noise, turned fine by hand, no problems at all other than the ls....probably had been like that since I have owned the car.

Yet here you go... so the only way is to pull it to bits.

Wow that looks toast.

I'm running a Torsen though so the insides are a little different

Well got it mostly apart - but for the life of me I can't get the drive pinion out of the diff housing.

Taken the front nut off - and tried hammering and pressing the pinion out towards the rear of the diff. Doesn't seem to want to move and I don't know how much pressure I can apply to it.

Anything I'm missing? I can't see any C clips or anything holding it in....

Don't $&#$% the thread on the pinion. That always makes life fun.
