electrical issues with 4AFE starter?

Postby gleem » Tue Oct 07, 2014 8:28 pm

Hey guys... so ive replaced what is presummed to be a dead starter on my 4AFE carib... however i cant get the car to start and the starter motor seems to fire itself up as soon as i put the batery back on suggesting its some sort of earthing problem..now im not the most on to it person when it comes to electronics..

Ive bolted the starter in, put the ignition plug in and looped the connection on the right bolt... am i missing something here?

Heres a youtube video of what happens once the battery is turned on

any help much appreciated!

It wont be earths - the starter earths thru the bellhousing not wiring.
Usually there is only two connections to the starter - one constant 12v directly from the battery which at the starter end is a large diameter cable with a eye terminal captive to the starter post with a nut, and a trigger wire from the ignition switch circuit which usually has a small black plastic plug that fits to the starter solinoid. I'm not familiar with the plugs on a carib starter, but it sounds like somehow the wiring is shorting so the solinoid is getting constant 12v too. Check the plugs first then maybe pop the starter back out and test it on the bench.

On some of them when you do up the main battery stud on the starter,
the lug on the end of the cable can twist and touch on the operating terminal.

Pretty sure there are two main terminals on the solenoid that are the same size.. are you sure you're on the one further away from the body of the starter? Your starter is spinning without engaging the flywheel, to me that would suggest that the solenoid isn't getting any power.. just the terminal with the copper strap that leads into the starter. You may have touching terminals as Matt said.
