what 4AGE do i have?

Postby DRFTIN » Mon May 11, 2015 5:30 pm

you would think i'd be able to find the answer to this myself but i'm sick of every search result being how to convert a fwd motor to rwd...

I've obtained a KP60 race/rally car with what seems like a complete AE86 running gear, just trying to find out if i have an original AE86 motor or a fwd swapped one.
If it has been swapped it seems to have all the rwd bolt on parts from what i know, running carbs so cant identify anything relating to the inlet.
What do i look for? Or ate they the same without the bolt on bits?

Will go take a few pics soon if they help

Early bigports have fewer ribs on the block, smaller diameter main journals, no oil squirters, no knock sensor, and, well, big inlet ports. Other than that, very little to no difference.
TVIS just kicked in, yo!

I believe blocks are identical between FWD and RWD of the same vintage, only exterior bits are different.
Might be able to find out from the block number what it was originally frim?

hmm, so i guess it doesnt really matter then
part of the reason for asking is i need a thermostat for it and figured they must be different, maybe not
and i just want it to be a genuine rwd motor, more bragging rights?

i hadn't considered the possibility of it being a bigport but maybe i should check that out too, painted rocker cover so no initial giveaway

The thermostat is inside the RWD water neck. So if the engine has
all the RWD water bits, regardless of engine and origin, it will take
the same thermostat as the 1983-1987 AE86.

have sent someone down to BNT with the sample and said its either AE82 or AE86, so hopefully they can get it right
