Manual Transmission Fluid

Postby solitaire » Wed May 13, 2015 7:33 am

Hi,

Aware there is heaps of oil questions posted regularly. I have done a search and read the forums on Bob is the oil guy, but still not 100% on my question.

I have a simple c52 on my 4age smallport in my ae92, it does not have an lsd.

Recomendations on castrol website and on here are for VMX, on here there is a mention of syntrax being great for viscous lsd boxes, not sure if that applies to non lsd boxes.

Question is: if i want to go one step better for my box would syntrax be the go? Or the Motul FF that Barry suggested? Tranny's don't need their fluid changed very often, so i'm happy to spend a bit more to get a better product in there for the long term.

cheers

What's good for a non-lsd box is good for a viscous LSD box. The viscous LSD is a sealed unit, it doesn't care what sort of oil you put in the gearbox so long as it has the right amount (for cooling the viscous unit), it has its own fluid sealed inside it for life. (which is why viscous LSDs eventually become not-so-LSD, particularly if you overheat them).

Only clutch types LSDs need special consideration of the oil you put in the gearbox since they rely on the friction of clutch plates which are exposed to the gear oil. Helical/Torsen LSDs are just another set of gears and do not rely on friction.

Toyota specs for the oil in a c52 are GL4 or GL5, 75W-90, so VMX 75w-85 or Syntrax/syntrans should be fine, but i'm sure somebody will weigh in with which oil in particular they found to work best.

Redline MT-90 is another option.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.
