AE111 Crossmember Bolt Size

Postby Boosted_162 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 11:47 pm

So I was doing the shitty job today of replacing the rear mount on the Carib. Was just putting it all back together and one of the 19mm headed bolts decided to try cross thread. I can't get it to seat without crossthreading, so I want to run a tap through it. Does anyone know the thread/pitch of them? I have both crossmembers out/suspension arms off now so have easy access for a tap.

Thankfully I have my wifes car for the next 5 weeks but i'd much rather mine back!

I think its M12x1.25

Best way is take the bolt to a place that has nuts/bolts on the shelf with sizes/pitch on display. Grab a nut and thread it all the way on.

A 1.5mm pitch thread will take a few turns to bind on a 1.25 thread so go all the way.

For the rear mount, I punched out the studs and welded nuts in their place. Putting matching bolts up through the chassis is a ton easier than trying to get the studs in the holes with no room to move.

Ended up being M14x1.5. Had compared it to my wheel nut and knew it was a M14, and then a comparison between 1.25 and 1.5 taps made it obvious it was 1.5. Thankfully my father-in-law had a tap for one, and got it all back together this afternoon. Close call!

Yeah I had read the different ways to change it, I just dropped the crossmember by 1-2cm and got it in. Just all turned to shit on 1 bolt

I hope to never have to do it again  (without a hoist anyway!)
