4age clutch compatibilty question

Postby ee90 » Mon Jan 18, 2016 10:19 pm

I have a blacktop 20v with c160 LSD in my ee90 club car. Would this clutch kit fit the blacktop flywheel and c160? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/toyota/clutches/auction-1018761830.htm.

My friend purchased this for a 20v Silvertop with T50 but has since sold the drivetrain and has offered it to me for next to nothing.

Has anyone had a blacktop flywheel modified/lightened? If possible I would like to get the flywheel lightened by approx. .5 to 1kg. Hoping this will aid engine response.

I had a similar kit on my 20V Silver top (blacktop flywheel) with C160 LSD box. Blew the diff gear/pinion, needed new shaft and gear ring (and a bearing). I was not doing burn outs either (just enthusiastic take off without much of wheel spin). Those ceramic clutches are too harsh for the gearbox, plus unless you have 300+ Hp they make no sense compared to stock kit. It is not like 20v makes a lot of torque (without turbo) to justify the clamping. If the pressure plate is uprated it will also kill your thrust bearings.

Mechanically it will fit, but C160 is a weak gearbox.

Also someone will need to confirm if spline on T50 is same as C160 otherwise the actual clutch disk might not fit.

I put a lightened flywheel and Exedy heavy duty clutch kit in my AE111 with C160 just over a year ago. I have done half a dozen track days since (lapping at 2K cup pace, so not taking it easy), plus daily driving, and it has been trouble free.

I don't normally load it like you might under race start conditions but occasional spirited take offs result in spinning wheels rather than slipping clutch. So, unless you are making a heap more torque than standard (mine only has light mods) you might not need to go to a puck style unit, and as Sergei said you might end up placing too much extra load on the gearbox.

I recommend the lightened flywheel, definitely builds revs quicker than standard. I found a purpose made secondhand unit so I have no experience with lightening the factory flywheel, other than knowing you need to get it done and balanced correctly. Both the secondhand flywheel and the Exedy clutch kit I bought needed more tweaking than I expected to balance them. Recommend Balancing Specialties in New Lynn (phone 827 6481) if you are Auckland based.

I've always run a standard Toyota clutch with my C160. Clutch still looked mint when I had the motor out 12months ago after a heap of trackdays and road use. Never launch the car or be too hard but on the odd occasion my left foot has twitched and had a second go at the clutch... :P Car now outputs a good 20% more power than stock too and given no signs of slipping

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will look into lightening the factory blacktop flywheel as that could be a worthwhile modification and stick with the current clutch , pressure plate combo. Current item is believed to be an updated full face from autoclutch. Sounds as though a puck type clutch might be too harsh for the c160. The motor is pretty much stock apart from some basic bolt ons (velocity stacks, cold air intake, modified secondaries on extractors, link computer).
