Jumper lead mishap

Postby BlakeNZ » Sun Apr 03, 2016 11:33 pm

Using My Dad's ford laser (2001) to jump start my vehicle(flat battery) I made the mistake of attaching the jumper leads to the running vehicle first, not spotting that the positive and negative clamps at the other end were touching each other! Sparks occured, and the Laser stopped running. Won't start. Has dash lights, but they die when i try the ignition. There was a sixty Amp ignition fuse, but that didn't appear blown. One relay had scorch marks on its prongs(marked "circuit" from memory). Will it be a fuse/relay or will it be a blown ECU? Any suggestions?( to appease an angry Dad!) :)

Checked all fuses and relays? Unlikely to have cooked the ECU, far more likely one or more of the main fuses.

Most likely his battery is borked :( Pull it out and have it tested.
If the free ends of the leads were on the ground (not touching any
part of his car) then there should not be any other damage.

Update. Thanks guys. The massive short had caused the earth terminal to lose proper contact. I cleaned it off with emery paper, and adjusted the clamp slightly so as to get it to grip tighter, and hey presto, car runs, no damage. Thanks all.
