Putting an EGT Probe in an exhaust manifold

Hiya,

I am looking at putting an EGT probe in the exhaust manifold of my 1KZ prado.

Has anyone done anything similar? Any recommendations on how to do it?

I have googled, but last time i took google advice this happened http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=89734 - thought i better ask first...

Wouldn't you just drill and tap a hole, or weld in a fitting like this?

Yep, Although many people report that they do it while it's on the engine, with turbo still attached, or even when the engine is running (presumably to stop any debris getting in the manifold) - my concern is that debris could damage the turbo, however i do not want to take the manifold or turbo off as i would rather not risk breaking a stud or something else.

I could just stick it in the downpipe, but then it's not a true reading as a lot of heat has already been lost...

I did mine by plugging the exhaust and putting compressed air on it to blow any bits out of the hole while drilling. Then we welded the fitting on with everything in place. Pretty easy job really.

I was going to dill and tap, do you think it needs a weld?

Also: Stupid question, but wouldn't compressed air on the exhaust drive air (and potentially debris) up the manifold and into the cylinders?

I would just tap and screw it in, would rather be able to replace it.

I only welded it as I didn't have a 1/8 npt tap and I didn't want it coming undone. As for the compressed air. Well the moment the drill punched through it blew all the metal back out. There wasn't much air leaking out of the exhaust or through the motor so the whole thing was pressurized and looking for a way out.
