Trailers!

Postby Boosted_162 » Sat Sep 10, 2016 8:20 pm

So a little bit off-topic from cars but kinda related I guess.....

A little bit of history first. So my dad got a brand new pinto trailer back in 2000 (holy shit - thats 16 years now!). After 10 years it wasn't getting used, sat round and deregistered. In 2012 I got hold of it, passed its first wof but 6 months later failed on bearing rumble. I replaced the bearing but didn't fix it. The trailer wasn't ideal for me anyway so I passed it onto my sister who seldomly used it and lived outside.

Anyway, now it's back in my possession and time to restore it. Pulled the axle and hubs off, and found this. Can't remember if this was the side that had rumble or not.

The other side is slightly better, but still showing some marks.

Is this too far gone to use or will a polish with fine sandpaper be enough?

This is the trailer when I got it back and after I got a new deck for it

Been years since I did any trailer bearings. But i'm pretty sure the bearing just slips on there as a complete unit, so it shouldn't be a big problem?
Probably not that helpful as i'm not 100% certain on that though.

Just taking a bit of a guess but it looks like your inner bearing shell has been spinning on the shaft. That could be making the rumbling noise picked up in the wof. If the damage isn't too bad then you could likely fix it with some new bearings and some loctite 609 retaining compound. If that doesnt work then it's time for new shafts or get them repaired.

/that. See if you can clean those stubs up with emery cloth, and hope the OD isn't too small for the bearing.

Sweet, thanks guys! Bearing still sits on pretty nicely so will just clean it up! Need to get at least 1 new hub so i'll get a full set of new hubs and bearings, and worse case can use the stub axle to make a new axle.

And if I get a new axle made, I can get it made slightly longer so I can fit my RP01s on it

scotch brite (The green scrubby stuff) with some emery tape or 2000grit+ wet sand will sort you out.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Awesome, I was struggling to find Emery tape where I don't have to buy 50m of it

Painted leaf springs with new bolts.

And received this today for my efforts

Still using same stub axles, took extra care when assembling, roll nice and smoothly with no rumbles :D

Yeah it's pretty sweet!

When I reregistered it back in 2012, my WOF guy gave me shit for not registering it as brand new to get year wofs, so lucky the law changed

It would have annoyed me knowing it wasn't registered as the right year
