What can get wet? Pod or Mushroom?

Postby Liloss » Fri Jan 21, 2005 10:38 am

I've decided to do a bit of a bling bling install job on a car and im going to mount the air filters externally to get the coldest air and "to look good" Just wondering what air filters can get wet? i dont mean like soaking wet but a little bit of water from road splash and what not, so whats my best option pod or Mushroom foam one?

cheers

Its not a good idea to mount it externally because of turbulant air. You want smooth flowing air going into your filter.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

yeh good point unlike air just bounceing off ur filter... thats why a pod would absorb the air thrown at ir more then the mushy... its cos pod is softer aint it... like a sponge thats why t would soak up more water

you dont want to get your air filter wet, makes it harder for the air to flow through :?

well they are all air filters, and all do the same thing. it really depends on what brand you buy. generally the better brands such as k&n apexi etc can filter out much smaller particles in the air, and also offer you a performance gain aswell.

where'd you hear that? besides their tendency to fall to pieces and get sucked through the intake (only when theyre really old and neglected) I havn't had any problems with them.

Liloss - just get a k&n and keep it oiled... good prices to be had, cant really go wrong with k&n. I'm pretty sure they have bling bling chromey ones these days too.

(speaking of chrome, i saw ice cube on tv saying that 24" chrome spinners are out now, to be cool your 'days' gotta match the colour of your car!...itll be a buyers market for 22-24" chrome rims soon i think :P )

The better brands come with water repellant oil for the filter which helps. Pod would be better than mushroom as mushrooms tend to have a foam type filter (well the ones I have seen do) which will absorb any water that gets into it whereas the pod has a better construction which wont absorb the water as much.

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAA! And herein lies the pinacle or poor taste, the summit of boy-racerism.

There's some stupid shit floating around this website, but this just about tops the lot. Air bouncing off your air filter?

well then turbulance... u know... its not like all air getting forced into the filter would b sucked especially on those k&n ones like say in the vr4 cos they are harder then say the trust airnix cos it would have abetter airflow if it was outside the car

use ur comon sense :x

It'd depend on the construction of the filter and how it was mounted externally.

If it was mounted externally in a way that is basically a "ram-air" then you'll be sweet.

however, if you put your filter in the wrong way, or with the wrong positioning, then you could actually end up with a situation at high speed where air was sucking out of the filter due to (some scientists name or anothers) effect

um, the filter dosent "suck air". Your engine (turbo or n/a) will "suck air" through the filter regardless of the position you mount it in..

refering to inanes stament... about air getting sucked out of the filter at high speeds

Dude I seriously doubt its a good idea to mount your filter outside you car where its exposed to everything your driving through. You dont want any moisture to come in contact with it let alone excess dust and shit off the road. It dosnt look cool, makes you look like a dumbass.

But if you were going to do do it get a chrome pod with neon around the top. Cool guy number 1? No.

i've seen foam filters that are oiled and some that are not, but i've never seen a NEW foamy that isnt oiled.....anyway, point is: foam filters are oiled too = they dont absorb so much water either.

..not gonna get into the discussion of this idea's rice factor. :?
