Captive springs

Postby Chrislost » Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:00 pm

How important is it that the springs are captive?
had some guy trying to sell me springs that were wayyy to short to be captive and he said as long as i dont get airborn itl be fine :S
would the car just be bouncey?
AND if i had an off track experience(airborn or somthing) could the spring fall out? (rear on ae86)

Uncaptive springs are also highly illegal, and for a reason - so they dont fall out.

[quote="Chrislost"]...and he said as long as i dont get airborn itl be finequote]... Take some steel capped boots and kick him hard, very hard! A lowered car is all good, but not when its putting you and ur car at risk.

Seen a car with springs that were to short on a bouncy section of road, one of his rear springs did actually fall out, slice through the tyre causing a blow out and seeing as everything was so up the shit by that stage reat of car went into a ditch in compassion. Funny thing was after it was in the ditch it didn't look like the spring had fallen out to cause it - just looked like another total'd car in a ditch. Oh yeah and that was a "bouncy piece of road" that my car with properly lowered suspension didn't bounce on hardly at all!

Sounds sorta like my suspension...put some Dobi's in the rear of my Detomaso, they sagged and became highly uncaptive :( So now my car looks like a real wedge, lowered only in the front with standards in the back

watever! im in cars tht have uncaptive springs all the time, my old te71 had slightly uncaptive springs (really uncaptive in the back tho) and i cud easily drive over bumpy roads at speed and never had 1 problem never, it felt fine, but i wud get the shocks shortened coz even tho most cops wont jack u up u only need 1 asshole to do it and u end up without a car 4 a while.

Yeah, it probably varies from car to car...

My dad told me he once jacked up a 1993 camry and the whole cv joints fell off, suspension fell off, i'm suprised the engine didn't fall out :P

jus bout ae82 with blacktopv in it, it also has supalows in front and wen i put it on the hoist found out its got cuts in the back im considering gettin shortend shocks or custom srpings, in my curent fx iv only got lows and a blutop with fuked rings, so which is cheaper i wud prefer to get custom springs but i dnt know how low they can b made

Don't post in a topic like this if you're going to give answers like that. Uncaptive springs are illegal for a reason. Not because a cop jacks your car up. They're dangerous. For f*@k$ sake guys. te71 I hope you're joking by the way.

Don't believe a word he says. If you're going to combine them with shortened shocks then sweet as, other wise, no, get some different springs.
