upping stock boost on a 1G-GTE

Postby overkill » Fri Feb 10, 2006 10:11 pm

soo.. what sorta boost do these run factory? 5psi?

anything that needs doing before bothering to up boost? maybe headgasket issues? we're talking like maybe 8-9psi.

car as intake and 2.5inch exhaust.

Gen 1s(W-A cooler) run about 6-7psi.
Gen 2 & 3s run 8-9 10-11 respectively from experience.

I'd be dubious on upping the boost on the standard turbos as I have blown 4 CT12s. Admittedly the first pair were blown whilst one the rear one was running naked boost. But the last two blew up after running 12psi for after about 250kms.

Get a T3/T4.

Also I should mention that I was running Gen 2 engines with red top T-VIS. Seem to spool a lot better with the big exhaust but you should look into removing T-VIS. It is probably there for a good reason(low end torque from what most people say) but I think that's bullshit. My car would always have adequate and then massive loads after T-VIS.

My 87 Ga70 ran at ~8psi. problem with the turbos (aside from blowing) is that they are pretty small and upping the boost generates more heat than power almost.
When I bought mine the turbos were gone & I replaced...there not renound for being the strongest around. Kept the t-vis on mine.
Cant believe im still a member here.

We used to run a 1GGZE engine in our old Celica,

we binned the s/c and run a huge version of the T3 and run at 20psi of boost on 100% standard internals.
The car ran like that for about 4 years, (roll over's and all)
untill we sold it.

The 1GGTE's dont have the same pistons, so I doubt they would take it and as said the turbo's are the weak point.

yea? that is interesting. means maybe gze pistons (if you could find some) would make gz soarers a viable drift option for cheaper :D??

thanks for the info re boost. fankoo :)

Basically yes,

Not getting into the forged /semi forged debate but
they have forged pistons same as the 4AGZE,

Seems all toyota's GZE's got good pistons but the GTE's did not?

Weird.
Also there are different versions of rods too.
DO NOT use sohc rods in a GTE or GZE as they are not good enough.

I think they are comparing the material they are made of, less than if the actual pistons can fit in a 4age....

Correct, same design, same material, different size.

However, the 1GGZE pistons and rods do fit a 4k...............

Does anyone know of any aftermarket pistons that can be fitted to the 1ggte, i am looking for 250kw and have found a few people fitting the 1g pistons into the sohc vtec 1600 as the have the same diameter i don't know how it would effect the c/r as the piston crown to gudgeon pin dimension is almost certainly different. would it be possible to fit a set of 6 4k forged pistons into tthe 1g as no-one seems to make an aftermarket off-the shlf piston for these.

What? The pistons and rods fit in with no mods. the 4k and the 1G have the same bore and stroke. Doesnt matter what the hell you do with the head.

Lots of people are using 4AGZE pistons making good power out of them so the material and design must be good.
Why not use 1GGZE std pistons are they will be good enough.
As said we ran them with 20psi aftermarket cams and extensive head work to make good reliable power.

I have a set of four aftermarket Denco pistons for a 1GGZE but not a full set as we damaged two on the first engine that was overrevved and tossed a rod.

Apparantly the car is up for sale on trademe again at the moment,
i'll see if I can find the link.
