Window Tinting Advice

Postby haydo » Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:39 pm

I'm going to be getting my windows tinted in the near future. I would like some advice on the type of tint i should get - 25%, 30% etc. I want it to be LEGAL but still have a cool look.

I read the Tinting thread in the FAQ section but it didn't really answer all of my questions. Judging by there diagram, can you not tint your front windscreen?

I don't no much about tinting hence this thread.

Any advice welcomed. Cheers

No, you can not tint your front windscreen. The only thing you can have on your front windscreen is a visor strip which can be 120mm.

Give me a pm and I can sort you some good prices at Tint - A - Car. My brother works there.

Is this for a passenger vehicle? Not a van or ute? If so, then you can only go to 35% on the side and rear windscreen.

Factory tinted windscreens are ok I think, but any tint that is applied to a front windscreen ie: non factory, is illegal.

Yes 35% is the darkest legal tint. Midnight Express looks darker than 35%, but is still legal.

Once you've done the side windows and rear windscreen, it looks heaps darker anyway.

Just don't forget that if you're doing it yourself, that most glass has some tint already so if you're buy 35%, there's a good chance you'll end up dark enough to fail a VLT test. And without a Window Film Association sticker you'll have no show of arguing the point.

So maybe 25% would be a more advisable option?

25% is darker than 35% so would be illegal, front window hads to be at least 70% or more.

The amount of 'visible' light that passes through a vehicle's windscreen and windows is measured in visible light transmittance (VLT). Clear glass has a VLT of approximately 85 percent.

If an overlay is applied to a window, the overall VLT level is the amount of light passing through both the glass and the overlay film.

Ahh ....

So just to clear it all up ..... 35% is more or less the only option if I were to do it myself?

When it comes to tinting your windows a tip that was given to me that worked real well is when applying the film to to your windows use a mix of 20% baby shampoo and the rest water in a spray bottle, use that to apply the tint as it is alot easier to eliminate air bubbles, using a non abrasive card.

Also for those out there with wagons Olds school / new school-.

Get your car reregistered as a "commercial" then you can legaly have 5% tints allround (except windscreen of course) if the PIGS ask then just show then the registration that states comercial and they cant do shit hahahaha

worked wonders with my Datson wagon

hope that helps

Cher;)

Does having PIGS in caps make you feel like your beating the "man" or the "system" ?
