Rules on relocating battery

Postby ChaosAD » Mon Oct 01, 2007 1:01 pm

Theres a few topics on here about relocating a battery to the boot, but couldnt find anything about the warrant requirements etc.

Insurance company wants to know that its done properly and suggested getting a cert for it 8O

What are the actual regulations on it? checked out the WOF pdf on electrical systems and it only mentioned a few things on checking the wires havent overheated etc.

im pretty sure it just needs to be in a secure box which is bolted down, then the battery itself strapped down too (ie, not just sitting inside the secure box). also i've heard somewhere that they need to be vented in some cases.

got a warrent for the cordia the other day and while i was at vtnz i asked, and the bloke said. Doesnt matter where it is. As long as its secured and the cabling isnt a fire hazard (ie naked power cable etc) then its saveet

You're thinking of motorsport regs I suspect, which are pretty strict.

motorsport regs also require min size rods as holddowns (8mm?), so if you're intending on doing any of that it may pay to check up on the rules.

I checked out the requirements for warrant and msnz schedule A and it conforms to both of them.
Told the insurance company what the vtnz guy told me and they sweet with it now

For a road car both the battery and the box need to be bolted down.

And it just so happens im still selling a vented sealable box that can be tied down, along with some super hardcore 80mm welding cable suitable for the baddest of projects!!

From the Motorsport New Zealand Regulations:

From the Motorsport New Zealand Regulations Manual:
-> Regulations -> Manual 33 -> Appendix 2 -> Schedule A.

(3) Batteries:
(a) All batteries shall be securely mounted and have the live terminal adequately covered,
(b) Batteries located in the cockpit shall;
(i) Be mounted on a flat metal base, and
(ii) Have two insulated metal clamps affixed by a minimum of 8 mm (ISO 8.8) bolts and nuts in combination with underfloor counter plates, and
(iii) For ‘wet cell’ batteries an independently attached leak-proof box vented to the vehicle exterior is required.
(iv) For a sealed “dry cell” (i.e.: may be fitted in any orientation, without any loss of fluid) may be mounted in the cockpit without a leak proof box.

for my relocation, I didn't conform to the above as I am no racing. But I did weld a couple of bolts into the boot as a secure point of attachment as well as using a 250A fuse and a battery box :)

I plan a odyessy battery ( gel cel , very compact , non leaking , can be mounted on side upside down , etc ) Remove areial in back of Gt4 - build a fiberglass or something similar " box " that will mould in with the interior trim panel , still be vented , just for double ok's and have a seperate high power rated circuit breaker close to the battery iscollating the +-ive line that leads thru the cabin. Any shorts will stop as close to the battery as possible ..

A seperate battery switch will be installed up front that can be linked to a cable for trackdays In cabin on the center console

All wiring will be done in 0 guage or higher insulated welding cable , shilelded further with foam insulation to stop any chafing . All terminals will be crimped and soldered ..

Ive done avery similar setup on a Gt4 already - passed ADR's and engineering scrutineers without hassles..

Plans will see the above install as a completely invisible - or as least intrusive into the cabin as possible - Gt4's have no boot space to start with with the full size alloy spare in the back - so a battery box in the " hatch " area isnt a want..

Dont want to drill holes in the bottem of the box to bolt down battery aS then it can leak.

Yea, going to bring it in and get the vtnz guy to have a quick look and note it down then the insurance company will be all good with it.

hi sorry to bring this back up, i got Adydas battery kit and have finally got time to relocate the battery, so all i need to do to get this puppy in is put the cable through the firewall, and maybe under the carpet all the way to the boot. The plastic box that it goes in has to be bolted in to what? As in my gtt under the carpet is the plastic compartment thingy do i bolt it in to that?

also since mine is a wet cell do i need to vent it to the atmosphere, how do i do this have a pipe going out of the box thru a hole in the boot or something :S

I got a couple of clips that you screw to the floor and the strap goes through them.
It will have to be sealed and vented outside as the boot is not seperate. But I cant remember if thats just for motorsport or for motorsport and wof.

I put flexible conduit over the length of the cable for additional protection.

Put a lug on it and bolt the cable onto the starter.

Do you have a rubber bung in the spare tyre well? Get a bit of flexible pipe and put it out there.
