bluetop missing?

Postby 79rolla » Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:39 pm

hey just got a ae82 fxgt, running a bluetop, its running like a complete bag (not idoling, sounds like a rotory when its runing and missing like hell)

has new dizzy cap and rotor aswell as plugs, will get new leads soon

the heaid gaskit was just done but previous owner took heaid off so dont know if all pugs ect are pluged in, vacume linrs on throtil body are not connected (dont no what they are suppost to be connected to)

also wen timing was done the backing plate was off, mate tinks the exaust cam might be off by a tooth, will be doing water pump so backing late will go on then if that could be the problem

thanks for any productive help

looks like it needs a shitload of tlc.

make sure the knock sensor is connected, for whatever reason mine (redtop) ran like a dog when it wasnt connected.

I dont use a backing plate so hacked a spare one the other day to line up cams on mine, cut it horizontally near the bottom of the holes for the cams so it can just sit on top there nicely, worked quite well. easy option to check the cams.

theres really no good reason not to have backing plate / cambelt covers in place. just asking for trouble leaving them off. how certain are you that the headgasket has been done correctly? done a compression check?

No point even trying to find the issue until you sort out vacuum leaks and the like if you have hoses not connected. Get those either connected or blocked off. If you think timing is out then whip the top timing cover off and see if you marks line up. If they do then check here spark is with a timing light. See where you are at after that

Whats the ignition timing like?

Got a timing gun to check?

make sure the knock sensor is connected, for whatever reason mine (redtop) ran like a dog when it wasnt connected.

Bluetops dont have knock sensors.

It will be vacuum, and or cam/igntion timing. Even with lowish compression it should idle semi alright.

I agree with the idea of putting the backing plate back on, it is fairly important.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it wont be helping that it has no pipe or filter on the intake so would be sucking in hot air.

My god!! what a mess! Surprised the exhaust cam pulley hasnt eaten the loom....

The engine hasnt been in an accident damaged car has it?? Try a timing light on all four leads and make sure they're firing consistantly. My old one had been in a frontal and chipped a tooth off the pickup in the dizzy.

ok thanks for that diagram, have timing light so going to cheack that, backing plate going on wen water pump going on. sucking in hot air is no issue as it has only been run for short intivils as it has no water in it... heaid gaskit was done properly, i helpd do it myself...

according to CAMB01 my timing could be my problem? sounds fimiliar and one of things i have been suspecting...

car hasint had a major acsident altho the left gaurd has been replaced due to small acsident apparently...

thanks for all your help[/img]

Timing makes a massive difference. I just got my engine and gbox into my car tonight. set it all up and my dizzy was out by a tooth and it ran like shit. Twisted it around 10 degrees and bam started sounding better.

Ran the timing light and my timing was still out by 15 - 20 degrees. They can run semi decently with horrible timing, hell i connected my leads in the wrong firing order and it ran up on 2 cylinders at 34 degrees retarded hahaha.
