Wanting help designing a template for caliper adapters

Postby cat007 » Fri Jul 17, 2009 3:21 pm

I'm needing someone to design me a template and/or 3D drawing to get my caliper adapters made.

I can supply the hub, rotor and caliper with pads.

Anyone on here that way inclined?

i made my own out of customwood and had a machininst make up steel ones as i decided the wooden ones might not last too long if they got wet.

You can take it to Precision engineering and he will do it all for you.
How much it costs... not sure.

I usually make a mock up out of MDF. Then draw it up in CAD and get it laser cut.

If you make the mock up from MDF or what you need, I can draw it up in CAD and get it cut for you.

Thanks - I'll try and make a mock up with MDF this weekend....

Ok so I've pretty much made a design from a polycarbonate type material

I'll finish it off this week and get it perfect then work out the bolt hole spaces exactly - although that's something I'd do after the bracket was cut....

I'll be in touch Bazda :)

Also - I require it to be stepped - like the pic below (that would be looking side on, (red lines are where the caliper bolts go through, green are where the hub bolts go through)). I was wondering if it would be ok to just use a single flat piece of plate steel/aluminium and then just space out the caliper somehow - or should It all be one piece?

Cheers :)

Aluminium would be ok? Even if pricier?

Depends how thick that plate is. And how long it is.

Cheapest way is to make it out of 1 flat piece, then get spacers lathed up to the required thickness.

If you make it out of 1 thick piece then there will be machining costs involved.

I would initially get them water cut, then take to a machinist to finish it off.

Well the thinnest piece could be anything up to +15mm....then the 'step' where the caliper would bolt up to would be another 6-7mm on top of that.

1 flat piece 15mm water cut. Then get spacers made. Would work out really cheap.
I would think the plates would cost $50 each, the spacers would be cheap as like $40 to be lathed up.

For 15mm I would learn towards steel not aluminium.

Well I was only suggesting 15mm - I could go bigger or smaller. just saying that I've got a far bit of room to play with....

If aluminium - what size should I go at the thinnest point? And what about steel?

Here's some pics of the mock up :)

Also make sure bolts are up to it (ie have same strength as OEM or better).

Was thinking of getting new HT ones (cant remember the strength number) from 'the bolt shop'

I'm not sure how thick you would need to go... but mine are 20mm thick at the thinnest point and 35mm at the widest. Also with a huge radius on all edges.

From your pics... doesnt tell us anything about how to make the adapter plate really lol

Nah I know - I haven't taken any decent pics yet. Just wanted some of the caliper and rotor in place :)

I'll take some decent ones tonight

Are yours aluminium Barry?

Any hookups for getting some, say, 30-35mm thick aluminium?

I imagine Ulrich will find the nearest barrel to bend me over...

Just go down to Nalco and ask them for some alloy.
I can get it cheaper but need to know the exact amount you require.

If you get it water cut they supply the material.
