How to get an engine to warm up faster?

Postby Burning Angel » Wed May 26, 2010 5:34 pm

My tt140 corona has a pushrod 2T.
it takes ages to warm up making the demister useless.

i can leave it idling for ages in the morning and it will only just reach the "C" on the gauge, it takes a good thrashing or extended driving to get the temp to come up but even then its not great.

when i first had it the temp wouldn't come up at all, which i thought was the thermostat sticking open. It turns out it had a 77° thermostat in it, so i replaced it with the standard 82° one.

I can go to a 88,89 or 91° thermostat which would raise the temp once its warmed up but I don't think it will get it to warm up quicker.

Anyone have any ideas?, or is this just an old car thing?

Also the poor heater performance could be a blocked heater core, but it would still be nice to have the engine warm up quicker for fuel economy etc.

Turning off the heater while it is warming up speeds it up.
It should take about 5min to fully warm up.
I don't think you have A/C but using that also helps faster warm up (plus it will clear the windscreen almost instantly).

I havent tried this but i suspect i could leave it idling for 20min and it would still not warm up, and yes i do have the heater of when i let it warm up.

I had suspected also that the new thermostat had gone bad but it has been fine when checked several times.

I has no A/C, and i don't think Burnouts would go down too well a 6am lol, also at that time of morning it only takes ~5min to get to work which is just about all down hill and even then im still giving it shit to try and demist the windows lol

Sounds like thermostat issue.
Is it sealing properly? Perhaps the O-ring is missing?

no o-ring on these, they're a non-bypass style thermostat too.
yes it has a viscous fan

nope not seized, although that wouldn't affect its warming up as the thermostat is closed.

Does the thermostat have the wee hole and valve in it for bleeding?

If so one without it may make a small difference.

Put some heat trace on the block and wire it into a pull out plug with a time clock. set it for an hour before you leave for work and problem solved. Seen ambulances with similar down south but it was a element in the radiator and a electric pump to stop them freezing when parked up

what is the real issue here, that you cannot demist your windows? is that what you are trying to achieve?

try covering most of your radiator with carboard blocking it from airflow maybe?

Radiator does very little during warm up.

but when all else fails....
Best way to get that thing to warm up would be to move to a warmer climate!!!

if you are only worried about demisting your windows. give the windows a bloody good clean, mix up some detergent with a little water, smear it all over the inside of the windows, let it dry, buff it off, hey presto no fogging up........
