Most problems with coilovers are to do with too stiff springs. Most off the shelf coilovers come with hard springs, so if your car is light, then you'll likely want to change them.

Probably referring to the Honda kiddies having 15kg front 10kg rear thinking that'll help their vtax. Those things are deadly, as in you can't turn from it's already crappy FWD layout and the stiff springs just makes it worse on NZ's bumpy roads, recipe for wrapping yourself around a pole, which is kind of a good thing, in a way.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

are they planning to stop doing cert for coilovers soon?
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

not soon but i have heard a lot of people talking about it happening in the next year or so. even my cert guy said.

it won't be an issue if you use your car for motorsport though as it will be covered by authority card. (which is actually a lot cheaper than a cert which is a bonus!)

Dude, i use john brett all the time, if you want tee it up to use my workshop, will charge you a small fee on top of the cert, he is pretty efficient,

As fasr as i know there is some major changes happening with the cert process over the next 2 years, BUT coilovers will still be road legal with a cert.

There is no plans to remove such items as coilovers from certs. 'utter nonsense'

From what a senior tech at work was saying (as he had been to a WOF meeting or update course); the use of coilovers on roadcars was going to be looked at. With the intention of making them illegal..... Maybe Leon is floating about and can comment? The tech's away on holiday so I can't check with him.

Probably due to a few issues with car bodies failing due to epically stiff springs

Tech was in just before lunch. Turns out it was brought up in an MTA meeting. As Brad said, due to people running mega stiff springs and strut towers giving way.
A few years ago in one of the MTA flyers there was an article warning inspectors to be warey of this sort of thing happening in cars with platform adjustable suspension and showed a picture of a Galant VR4 liftback where the section of tower that the rear strut mounted to was completely broken away from the rest of the body

I don't see the point of coilovers in a purely road going car over a good shock/spring combo.

Though you don't get street cred if you don't have coilovers...

They are going into my Corolla ute purely because I will definitely need to fine tune the suspension and play around with spring rates with the V8 up front. It is also much harder to retain the standard spring seat when shortening the housings to retain suspension travel, as well as providng more room in the strut towers for camber adjustment.

Bit of an extreme case of a road going car though :P Was more so meaning every tom dick and harry putting them in as they are cool and the only way to get a car to handle well.
