Hard Street Use/Track Use brake Pads

Postby wde_bdy » Thu Oct 06, 2011 10:34 pm

Looking for opinions on some new brake pads for my Mazda Demio, will probably need to be made to suit rather than off the shelf options. have been using Minex 1166, good for track days but dusty as shit on the roads and getting around 20,000k's out of a set. Any recommendations and suppliers/cost indications appreciated, want someonething that will last on the track but work from cold on the road.

Yeah that is where I normally get my Mintex pads from, just after other peoples experiences.

The wife races it, you don't require a lot of horsepower to have fun and it is extremely reliable. Drive 400k's to track, swap to semi slicks on the front (only because it is too expensive to melt another road tyre), race all day then swap tyres back and 400k's home.

my best experience with pads for mixed use has been with TRW pads from appco. $130 for front set and lasted half a dozen track days and 10000km's of hard road driving.

using mintex's now but they are a bit unnerving when cold and yeah the dust is pretty excessive! would go back to TRW's if my driving wasn't more track orientated than road orientated (only done 5000km's this year instead of the usual 20000kms..)

I was thinking about going for the Hawk S (street) pads for my club car (4AGE slow Corolla).

We could maybe go for combined shipping, as it's US$45 to ship 1, 2, 3, or 4 sets of pads (where set = enough pads for the front).

I priced them up locally, and it was something like $170 for just the front.

Then priced them up at something like Hawk Brakes Direct, and they were US$67 for the front. That being somewhat of price difference.

EBC red stuff provided awesome street use braking. Supposed to be good on the track, but never got round to testing them on there

Sort of, it is the progression of the 121 and some had a 121 sub-model. There was also a Ford Festiva badged version. It eventually evolved into the Mazda 2.

I would just buy a set of pads that work well on the road, then swap in the mintex pads when you get to the track.

Horses for courses and all that.

I would do the same.

You cant really have a track pad and a street pad all in 1. Its going to be better in 1 area more than the other.

On the race track you need a pad which runs at high temps. On the road they dont get that hot, when race pads are used at medium to low temps they wear faster than being used at high temp.

Not interested in swapping pads everytime I hit the track (although only a 15 minute job) and the car regularly gets pushed to good brake temps on the road. Budget or lifespan not a huge deal, I realise good brakes cost money and wear faster (paying $200-225ish for the Mintex at the moment).

The TRW pads are a pretty good compromise for a light low powered car, they're rated to 650 degrees and work from cold. Absolutely not a race pad, but have had experience myself with them on track and they're good.
In something fast/heavy they probably wont be so useful though.

Given that you are already swapping the front wheels when youre at the track, I think atleast just swapping in a good compound for the front is the most logical solution, and would take less than 5 minutes.

Even though you said you push your car on the street, it wont be hard enough to get the mintex right up to temp. I find my 1166's dont start REALLY working until lap 5 or 6 at the track(with a 1500kg car), something I know I, personally, could never try achieve on the street.

The only option I know of that might suit your dual purpose (based on others experiences) is a pad made over the ditch called QFM-A1R (sp) they seem to cope very well with street driving and the occasional track day on jza80s so Im sure the weight of your demio wont stress them too much

we ran Mintex 1166's in a pure road car for about four years, was perfectly fine for everyday road use from cold. Just noisy, and filthy wheels after driving 20 meters.

Yeah I've done that for the last 100,000km's, just seeing if there were better options.
