smokey 4agte

Postby themaleman » Sun Nov 13, 2011 6:37 pm

Ok recently got my levin going again, replaced cv boots, wheel bearings, and oil change. And now its pretty smokey :( white smoke on idle and some of the time when im driving

today i found i filled it up with to much oil as when i removed the turbo oil drain, oil drained out of the pipe in the sump and the drain pipe its self.

would having to much oil in there have stuffed the oil seals on the turbo? or should i be looking else where for the problem?

any input appreciated
thanks

Whats the history of the turbo? new?, rebuilt? or second hand?

Yes oil can blow past the seals if you overfill the sump blocking the oil drain out of the turbo. Normally if it's only for a couple minutes you can get away with it. Pull the downpipe off and check if the turbine is oily, it shouldn't be.

Is the oil white or blue? Generally blue is oil, white is water

white smoke, i checked the turbo for play when i drained the excess oil and there was no play in the shaft, and it still boosts fine, would this suggest that its not the turbo oil seals?

When you checked the turbo, did you have the outlet side of the turbos intake housing off? If you did was there any oil in there?

I had this exact issue on my sw20, was caused by rooted oil seals due to oil gasket put on backwards and blocking oil drain.

Bad news it cost me close to a grand to fix it

white smoke and it smells like burnt oil, i did replace the turbo oil drain gasket with gasket go but I'm pretty sure it wasn't blocked because oil came out when i primed the turbo before starting the car

I saw a huge white smoke cloud in the distance down the road a while back, I first thougth someone was doing an epic burnout. But as it came closer it was just a very very sick car, burning lots of oil.

I'm still impressed how a small exhaust pipe could expel so much frigging smoke!

Being a Mitsi dealership Tech I can confirm this  if its a mitsi and has black smoke then its a GDI.

If white smoke is oil then I must have been diagnosing cars wrong for the last 14 years

Isn't blue smoke oil getting burnt inside the cylinders and white smoke is oil burnig outside of the cylinders, like oil passing by the turbo seals and burning in the exhaust.
