Where to get an exhaust made in auckland

Postby steroidcontaskie » Wed Jan 11, 2012 10:25 am

Hi all,

I am getting to the final stages (hopefully) of my 2jzge na-t build and need to get a new exhuast made. Already have the downpipe and was looking at a 3 inch going into twin 2.5s at the back in mild steel.

Anyone know any places around auckland that are decent and well priced?

Cheers
Eddie

Decent and cheap don't normally go hand in hand

I have had good work done by Woolf on Dominion road, I wouldn't say they are cheap, but they are pretty sharp at their work.

Other place that gets good rep is Al's Mufflers I think they are called - located on the shore somewhere

Also check out Takapuna Mufflers on Barrys Point Rd (North Shore). They did a custom exhaust for my Lotus 7 replica a few years back, did an awesome job, took half a day and sounded great!

I found them to be expensive and difficult to deal with. The younger guys were ok, but the old guy who runs it was a c*nt.

If you want a mint tig welded stainless exhaust and have a bit of cash id take it to a race car fabricator :).

Me personally I just make my own lol.

+1 for woolfes. Told them I needed a lukey style muffler chucked on my 20valve because the old muffler had dissapeared and to do it as cheap as poss. He had an mint second handy lying around. Charged me 120 for muffler, labour, some pipe run from the rear suspension to the back and a mint second hand chrome tip. I was stoked. He did a lot of work for a company I used to work for and we were always extremely happy with the work and the price.

+2 to Woolf Mufflers, always go to them for any exhaust work. They know their stuff and always do a decent job too.

I would suggest just keeping it 3" the whole way through as the twin 2.5" just adds extra price, weight and complexity to the system.

Do you have a build thread for your car, OP? Ive walked the 2JZ na-t path too, so keen to see what your set up is like :)

2jz Na-T build

Postby steroidcontaskie » Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:54 pm

Build is going about as smoothly as yours did.... I also got a XS power kit that didnt fit at all. manifold and downpipe were a complete disaster, replaced all the lines and fittings that came with the kit, intercooler didnt fit.... etc..... turbo is huge.... way bigger than the one is ordered.... sound familar?

Limbo, of mark 3 turbo A fame, has been giving me a hand with the build, he has been really great about it too.

When its all put together I might make a build thread, but as it is, it is too depressing to look back at all the issues that I have had.

You are of course right that a straight 3 inch is just as good and cheaper than going into 2 2.5s. But the reason I want to get a dual exhaust is for appearence. The soarer suits it and I didnt really want to put a fake pipe out of one side.

Cheers
Eddie

Certification

Postby steroidcontaskie » Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:56 pm

The other thing that has popped up is that I may need to get a cat put in to get the car certed. Anyone know for sure if I have to do this? Or if there is an easy work around?

Cheers
Eddie

Ah I see, our projects sound like they were both a nightmare. The only difference being that they sent me a smaller turbo, and sent you a bigger one.

I forgot you have a soarer, ignore my stupid suggestion about the single exhaust.

I know its hard to see any positives while youre ankle deep in a nightmare conversion, but I hope you are over most of the hurdles now, and can enjoy all the hard work once its finished. It took me a while to get over the frustration but now I look back and accept it was a learning process lol

Re: the cert question? what year is your soarer? I imagine a cat would only be required if your car is built after a certain year where emission controls were mandatory.

Good luck mate
