Fuel consumption differences rav 4, caldina gtt, corolla.

Postby LEAKER » Tue Oct 08, 2013 5:18 pm

Hey guys. I currently own a gtt caldina and can't afford the running costs any more. I've been spending about $120 a week on gas and if i'm lucky i see 10km/l
Does anyone have an idea on what a Manual 4 door rav 4 (1994ish) or a AE111 Manual 4afe wagon would get on consumption.
I realise mileage etc come into account but it's just that a rav4 would be our preference however being a 4wd 2.0l i'm worried it's going to be considerably more to run than the corolla which is probably what i should be buying.

cheers

i'd expect the corolla to return 8l/100km or better if driven calmly and all is working as it should.

bzg-bling has a rav4 and laughs loudly whenever someone mentions fuel economy. i think he talks about numbers like 14l / 100km

My AE111 with 4AFE does around low to high 7s.

litres per 100k not 1/4 miles
:P

It will drink buckets less than the others you mention.
if running cost is a factor, the only thing that will beat a Corolla is a Starlet or Nifty 50

hey rav 4s aren't notoriously unreliable like subarus, just frowned upon for guys. Although i would only be looking at a 4 door which i think is a bit more ok for a guy.

please i don't need to hear how someones mate had a subaru that's done 6 billions kms. Thats not what this thread is about.

No comparison in fuel economy, mines not manual though. If that is the main driver for the change, 4AFE it is  Rav won't save you anything on the fuel bill.

If you can afford one,go for a Fielder 1.8S,way more economical than the Corolla with the 4AFE engine.I had a Carib 1.6 auto 2WD(same as NZ new Corolla) ,replaced it with a Fielder 1.8S auto,in old terms went from 36-38 MPG with the Carib to 44-47MPG with the Fielder, much nicer car to drive, better car all round.

Both that economical then? Have been browsing the 1.8 corollas, but wasn't sure what they went like and fuel economy wise.

You could go somewhere in between the GTT and the 4afe with a BZ touring wagon (blacktop 20v)

Done 10,000 km in mine since so far with an average economy of 11.9km/l that's 70% city driving and I don't drive economically. Usually gets about 15km/l open road driving.

My manual 4afe AE111 wagon - similar to MRrevhead 7 - 7.5 L/100 km
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

unfortunately they do get bought by halfwits, halfwits that run the poor little 3S-FE for 50,000km on the same oil, and then when it ruins itself in a big way after they notice its going slow and they have to really put the foot flat to make it drive, they RUSH to the trademe forums to tell anyone who will listed to stay away from Rav4's as they are all unreliable due to their single experience caused totally by their idiocy

ive seen this first hand haha, A good Friends uncle has owned one for a few years, and i have watched it turn from a reasonably clean car and sludgless engine, to a piece of shit thats ran all the bearings and said uncle throwing words like "ILL SUE THEM" around as if he knows what hes talking about :P

I have a 1990 corona with a 3sfe and it gets 650kms from 50ltrs. That is around town stop start and I am not super light footed.

My old blacktop levin got 12-14k's per ltr. or around 8ltr per 100kms.

Also consider that if you DO decide for something like a blacktop you really should be using 98 or 96/95 at a bare minimum, so that should be taken into account.

If you are working out real world fuel costs the older engines like the 3sfe may use 5-10% more petrol, but the cheaper octane petrol will off set that.

Also my sister has had a 1994 rav 4 for like 5 years, has always been very reliable but it does use a lot of petrol.

Current: 90 3sfe Corona

yeah i think we will be looking at something like a 4afe ae111 station wagon or spacio. Do you think autos are that much worse on economy that it's worth worrying about. Keeping in mind i live in Wainuiomata and the hill downs petrol like the Heff downs viagra.
