I doubt you'd get a turbo small enough for a 50cc engine.

Look how big the exhaust is, it is about the size of a 50c peice!

ras: it could have pushrods... i think you could be off on your combustion chamber placement, look at where the plugs are. and the join in the head/block. the piston rings wouldnt travel past that join.

then again if its got some weird pent roof type combustion chamber maybe your right.
the things is its hard to guess the actual size of it...

one thing im sure of, fivebobs getting a goood laugh out of this

Mr Revhead, Yeah, it could have pushrods,
and as for the combustion chamber, Im just taking a stab in the dark.
I thought it might be a sort of wedge chamber design, but your right, it probably wouldnt go up that far.
I guess we'll only know the truth if we could see inside.
But never the less, Its an interesting little thing, and ive enjoyed trying to work out what the deal is. :D

Ahh, thank you Ras. .it all makes perfect sense now! :)
As a valved 2-stroke it would be quite a bit more efficient seeing as you're not losing part of the mixture on the compression stroke! Brilliant!
Some of the lines at the top must be for lubrication to the head/cam.
The only thing I don't understand is that it *looks* like it has a sump so I'm wondering how the reed valve would work without the pressurized crank. Perhaps the intake is valved also, the valves driven off the crank?

already said that
and the bottom end looks liek any reed valve indution

you soudl have a read iup on how the intake on a late model 2 stroke works
it might help a little

No worries, snwtoy
to be honest I am not exactly sure on how the intake valve system works on a 2stoke, I just havent heard of many valved intakes on 2 strokes.

But on a different note, chainsaws usually have 2 strokes,
how about a V8 chainsaw!?!?

The engine is an experimental three cylinder supercharged two stroke made by Ferrari

Here's another view

hmmm, a force induced 2 stroke eh?

..wouldnt majority of this excess charge be lost past the transfer ports, when scavenging the exhaust gas? meh.

..must have thin oil, otherwise excess crankase pressure must bring on abit of oil "churn-age?" maybe a pressurised oil system? ..meh.

i wont question the makings of ferarri 8)

of course! the red cam cover should have given that away!
new tesstarossa engine maybe?

any idea on what it was intended for? or was it just an experiment with no actual application in mind? didint they build a 2 stroke v8? i seem to remember a ferrari that was built solely do demonstrate their ideas and capabilities.

not with a cam controlled exhaust system, that way the exhaust can be times so that it's closed when the intake mixture reaches it.

Err, no, like all two strokes the oil is mixed with the fuel, premix or injected into the engine seperately. The cams should have their own oil supply but that wouldn't affect windage.

No, unfortunately the only info on the Ferrari Owners site is that it was an experimental engine made by their "Pilotino" engine research division. I've found another photo of a different version of the same engine, which shows the exhaust ports on the top of the engine.

What they made it for I have no idea, but it looks to me to be a fairly large capacity and quite a tall engine. Boat racing maybe? or as Mr Revhead says just to show off their capabilities

This is not right, have a look at a GM 2 stroke diesel _ oil in sump, overhead exhaust valves, supercharged (some are supercharged and turboed. They are made in 2 cylinder , 3 , V6, V8, V12 and V16
