I want to upgrade the rears because I've upgraded the fronts and have race suspension (very little front/rear weight transfer). So, I've have had to fit a Wilwood bias valve to cut back the front brakes to avoid front wheel lockup (which kind of defeats the purpose of the bigger front brakes). I find it impossible to lock the back brakes which tells me that I can do with more braking on the rear.

I had another play with the rear brakes yesterday. The original front AW11 rotors will fit on the rear, but there isn't enough room between the inside edge of the rotor and the lugs on the hub to fit the original AW11 front caliper. I also have the front caliper off an AE11R Corolla that will bolt up, but I have been told not to use this on the rear. This is the calpier that I'm running on the front of my car, and Les Hunter reckons that I can't run the same calipers front and rear in a saloon car. So I don't really know what calipers/rotors I'll use now. It seems the overall height of the rotor can't be any more than 41.5mm.

So, some questions about the SW20 rears.
Will the SW20 rear calipers simply bolt up to the existing ('84 N/A) hubs?
Is the overall height of the SW20 rear rotor no more than 41.5mm?
Does it matter whether I use the early or later SW20 rears?
What is the smallest diameter wheels that can be fitted once this upgrade is done?

well the early sw20 rears are almost the same as the facelift aw11 rears, but the rotors are thicker (about 16mm vs 9mm IIRC), and vented. I'm not sure what the height is, but I can tell you since they're the same diameter as the facelift aw11 rears, you can fit them under 14" wheels.

The 91-93 sw20 rears were larger diameter I think, as they came standard with 15" wheels. Basically the same as the earlier ones but with a 1" larger rotor and a caliper bracket that moves the caliper further out. They might also be thicker ?

All_Fours wrote:yeah sw20 rears can be swapped relatively easy, but obviously you need to re-drill the rotors, and also get a spigot adapter because the center hole on the sw20 ones is much larger.

you also need the sw20 calipers :D

When I said 'rears' I meant the entire set up. Because you also need the caliper brackets :D

Which version of the SW20 are the brakes you're using from? I thought the SW20's had 2 rear brake sizes - turbo and non-turbo. I've bought some MR-S rear rotors from RaceBrakes, so I'm sorted for rotors, but I'm currently stuck on the calipers. The new rotors are 263mm dia, the same as the solid s/c rotors I'm currently running, and they're 16mm thick. However the non-turbo SW20 caliper brackets are too short (ie require a smaller diameter rotor) but the caliper width is perfect for these rotors. I believe the SW20 turbo rotors are 20ish mm thick which would make the caliper bracket too wide to hold the pads securely.
Does anyone know if the SW20 has a rear rotor 263mm dia and 16mm thick?

turbo and NA brakes are the same (JDM models)
the early models were same diameter as the aw11 facelift but thicker (16mm), the later models were larger diameter, so aim for calipers and brackets from a 92+ (15" wheels factory I believe) and see how that goes. Or get early model sw20 rotors :)
