considering how most of our cars would be treated before being imported, i'm sure a $10-15 fram filter or the likes will be good enough to keep the engine in good shape....with regular services....
but anyway.... $40.... really....

Could my POS Repco Filter be the reason why my oil has gone reasonably-black extraordinarily fast (like after 3000kms)?

Unlikely, its more to do with driving conditions than the filter.

I have heard that you cannot wear oil out. When it goes black, its just impurities getting into the oil. Have I got exhaust fumes or something getting in there?

the fact that most people at repco know less than their arse computer system doesnt help...
the black oil may also be due to you not draining all the last lot out properly (sp?) but totally draining is pretty much impossible!
