Both the cam wheels have two marks on them.

They both go with the one mark at the top lined up with the mark on the cam cover,
and the other two marks are meant to line up against each other in the centre,

so the inlet cam has one mark at 12 o'clock and one at 3 o'clock
and the exhaust cam has one mark at 9 o'clock and one at 12 o'clock.

couldnt find another mark on the exhaust wheel... ? anyway, SUSSED IT!!! It was the coil! It was firing, we checked that many times, but wasnt giving a powerful enough jolt to spark under compression, threw in a coil off an old 1uz (its done 10's, must be fine hehe) and it fired straight up, running perfect

Thanks for the help given.

For reference, i only doubted the spark when it wouldnt run the timing light. Checked the light on another vehicle, fine. The light obviously wouldnt pick up the pulse in the HT lead, nor in the coil lead. I guess there is a way to test the coil but it never occurred to me because it was actually sparking with the plugs pulled out. Tricky.
