You could just slap a turbo on, but there's no way it'll last.
There are ways to make it go better, but they tend to be more of a band aid, rather than a proper solution.
To do it properly, you'll be looking at quite a bit of money and time deciding what it is you want out of the car.
I had spent upwards of $5000 on my FXGT, including the car. I still don't have a clutch to suit the extra power, or a proper stand alone ECU. It was going to be run with piggy back type devices. It still has an open diff and the stock gearbox, which would go ok, but is limited to how much power I could pump out.
I bought my AE101 GT-Z for $6600, already converted to turbo. Motor rebuilt about 20,000km ago. It has the good gearbox with LSD. The clutch kit in it was over $700 (going by the receipts I've found in the car) Got a Link ECU running it (reciept for $1250 in labour for install and tune). Nice mags, brand new tyres.
It needs a bit of work still, but it's a very good base for a car that should put out about 180-200kw at the wheels when done.
this tread is awesome, im sure it was covered last week, and the week before lol, mate if you want it to be relaiable and quick then get your cheque book out.
$20k is about the mark for a professional setup 10k for reliable and tidy less than 5k is rangi mods.com
$20k on what? He just wants to turbo his silvertop. Bredon has spent about 20k or so and has bigger brakes, a crazy fuel system, the suspension stuff, new wheels and custom work to the car t make it all fit in. He's done the whole lot.
For a low boost setup, without massive power, there's no need to spend $20k on it. Hell, I'd buy a better car if it came to spending $20k on my little Corolla or Levin.
You could turbo a stock silvertop for a reasonable amount provided you shopped around, did your homework and did as much of the work yourself as possible. Stock silvertops can be turboed with the high compression, but it'll limit the amount of boost and it'll need to be tuned well.
Under $5k is not rangi mods at all. Under $5k could just be well thought out and cheap setup. Rangi mods is welding it up to the stock manifold and running no fuelling or timing control. It'll go (for about 20 minutes

)
It's not always about how much money you throw at it or how much power you can make. I stock silvertop with a low boost turbo system would be a fun streetable combo. Not everyone needs over 200kw at the wheels out of their show car looking engine bay.
I say go for it and see what sort of results you can get. you might be pleasantly surprised.
