i guess she wants the five door convenience. there are some liftback corollas with standard 4AGEs, i dont think any 5 door hatches got em though.

if 3k is too much then you are probably going to struggle to afford a conversion :)

edit - above link looks like good option. rev problem will be the idle speed control valve

Yea for a 3K budget you aint going to get much...thats if it is what you were hinting at. Every now and then there are random ae9X shape 5 door hatches that pop up that people have already put 4ages in, but not very much. There was a red one about 6 months ago that wasnt too bad. Any reason you want a hatch? If you want a 4age with 4 doors what is wrong with corolla gt? ae100 (or whatever) shape of course.

For 3K you would probably get a rolling body and a few bits and bobs to put in it but you would want to add a fair bit more to that if you cant do it all yourself/want to get it going.

Thats a great idea... where can I find a 5 door corolla with a 4AGE?

You can get 4 door cars with 4ages as someone posted the link above. If you can't afford to pay 3k for that car good luck buying a 5 door car, then a 4age, then get it put in, all for less than 3k.

Maybe get something like this:

5 door + a good reliable motor. You're buying a family car so your kid has more leg room, can't figure out why it has to have a 4age. But hey, each to their own. 4afe is a nicer engine for town driving.

Having owned a 4age and a 4afe, as BZGbling said, the 4AFE is a nicer engine to drive around town and a wee faster around town in traffic.

Do you plan on modifying it for performance?

Im thinking the budget itself throws the entire idea in the wheelie bin.

Nothing wrong with a 4afe tbh. Not AS great but it depends what you are doing with it I suppose. There is someone on here who has a pretty recent thread of a trueno that had a 4afe, switched to blacktop now but he did not have many bad things to say about them aye.

I think if you are wanting a 5dr 4age just for the fun of it, and wanting to do it for 3K you have 3 choices really:

1. Buy a reliable 5dr without a 4age and leave it at that. No problems.

2. If you can settle for 4dr...go with the GT

3. Buy yourself the 5dr and an average condition 4age, sit them both in the garage until you can accumulate what is needed to get it going. Money, parts and experience/even more money for labour!

that would be me  4afe's aren't a bad engine, with some decent leads, cold air intake and a simple 2.25" exhaust it goes quite well for what it is. and they are super reliable!
but having said that 4afe can't beat blacktop on the way it revs. feeling of 8K rpm >> 6K rpm!!! but i think if you are comparing a 16V 4age to a 4afe then there are alot of similarities. although the 16V 4ages have a lot more scope for mods.

I'd disagree, a smallport 4AGE has plenty of low end torque for what it is, and is shedloads quicker up top than a 4AFE.

That Cielo is gonna be your best option, unless you're happy to have an engineless project car while you save up to do the conversion properly. If you dont know much about wiring, you'd probably end up spending at least $1k with an auto sparky to get it going.
