My EVO gets between 400km to 450km from a full tank of 98. Currently is costing me $98 to fill 45ish litres. Has a 50 litre tank.
Also i drive it mostly sedately, with a few on boost accellerations every now and again like going up hills or motorway on ramps.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay - had to go through a whole tank! :D

Well...

I filled my car up from a constant orange fuel light, so as dry as I deared to get it.

Went to Caltex

Used 95 @ $2.069 per litre

Filled the car up - 36.416 Litres @ $75.34

Drove it until I was just below a quarter of a tank, but was on the open road and had nowhere to stop for gas for a while, so I unfortunately had to put more in.

Went to Mobil

Synergy 5000 @ $2.119 per litre

Put in $30 worth - got 14.6 Litres.

So I continued to drive it until I had a constant orange light again.

I travelled 685km from $105.34 of gas @ 50.57 Litres.

This equates to 13.54km per Litre.

So i guess this is actually quite normal after all that?

But, in saying that - I usually never completely fill up during the week - usually a few lots of $20 fills at a time.

Would this change the fuel consumption as opposed to completely filling up when I needed to?

I would say 2/3 of this driving was 100km open road - As this past weekend I went from Auckland to Whangamata and back - also including driving everyday to work and back on the motorway.

Your thoughts...

Perhaps because you are only putting $20 in at a time it feels like it using more petrol rather than just filling it from empty to full each time?

Similar thing was happening with me and my Corolla. Thought it was chewing gas but once I actually did a proper fill and saw how many k's I got it seemed normal

Your method is a bit flawed (never did full to full trip calculation), but never the less, the consumption seemed to be normal, and it should make no difference driving on $20 at a time on fuel consumption.

Yeah to need to fill it to the brim, drive till empty, fill to brim again and take note of exact Ks and Litres. Do that a few times to get a good average.

you'll get better fuel economy if you keep it near empty due to the reduced weight ;)

I know you are not 100% serious, but for some people without sense of humour I will break this down:

40L of petrol is 33.5kg of weight.
Assuming weight of the vehicle is roughly 1300kg with driver, 33.5kg is just 2.6%. Those 2.6% will not work out in direct fuel economy gain either, as huge percentage of work done propelling a car is used on drag and friction. So perhaps it will make ~1% difference...

Running higher pressure in tyres does a lot more, so does driving sensibly.

If you are into fuel economy, do the following:
put 165 or 175 low roll resistance tyres,
pump them up to 3Bars,
0 or 5W30 oil in the engine,
synthetic 75W oil in the gearbox,
lower it,
underbody tray
smaller battery

But again 4AGE is not a very good base engine for this purpose.

Yeah, hence I am not into fuel economy. well not in next 30 year at least.
Then I will just go electric or something.

But tyres make huge difference in fuel economy.

Here is more speculation on the topic running on low will lead better fuel economy:

1L or petrol produces ~ 6-7MJ of energy.
it takes ~13kJ to propel 33.5kg to 100kph (E=0.5*m*v^2).
in other words ~0.2% of said 1L of petrol or ~2mL.
So each time you accelerate full tank to 100kph it takes extra 2mL (or cc) of gas. Remember your injectors are capable of injecting ~ 210-290cc x4 per minute at full load.

Did you factor in that the chemical energy is produced in heat and sound as well?
