what can cause high voltage output on an alternator

Just out of note. I did have the alternator rebuilt when I first got the car at a cost of about $400.

Yeah but 4age regulators go "poop" over time ... it's just one of those things that comes around more quickly in some cars than others.

I would have actually said that the regulators in them are more reliable than most,
not that often we have to replace a denso internal regulator compared to a mitsi or hitachi one.

That said the aftermarket regulators for them are crap,
I would rather run a second hand genuine reg than a brand new aftermarket one.

I've had to do two or three on my 4age's over the years, and never on anything else I've owned. Maybe the odds have just been against me though :)

Sweet as, shit if its going to cost that much $&#$% that! Or was that with them removinhlg and refitting also?

I have been showing no mercy on it with my 1100 rms amp so i probably toasted it.

I am going to get a 2nd hand one for the mean time to buy some time to rebuild the old one. Pretty sure theres a bigport down at pickapart, hopefully its still got the alt

Also rebuilds dont always go perfectly, im a living exa mple of that case :lol: so no worries there

If part A breaks though you fix it, part B might fail 5 minutes later, but that doesn't mean the rebuild was done wrong.

sweet as. ive never looked into rebuilding an alternator before so i wouldnt know how the two are related.

anyway, i put my spare battery in today and jump started the car just to move it, (it takes until about 1800 rpm before the voltage starts to rise abnormally so i figured why not move it somewhere better to work on in the mean time)

noticed the alternator is back to normal???

ive left my amp unplugged for the mean time just so i can hold onto as much battery power as possible,

i would be ok to chuck new battery in and just keep a very close eye on the voltage for the mean time right?

i have a dash voltmeter, nothing fancy, it just says 0v on one side, and 18v on the other side, and has a highlighted "safe" section in the middle. so i cant read exact voltage until i pop the hood however i can tell if its running abnormally

If it's freaked once, it is going to do it again.

to fix it, i need money. to make money, i need my car. :lol:

cant believe this happened like a week after i sold my other car :x

ill just borrow some money and fix the alt asap. right thing to do i guess.

I got it rebuilt by a very good Auto Electrician. Most likely just bad luck of a part not being up to standard. You might just want to use the one you have in the car and buy another reg for it.

If you are going to fit a new reg, you really need to check the rotor current and for shorts in the rotor too.
