When thinking about what turbo to use I've always been a fan of considering where I want to make my power more then how much power I can potentially make, anyone mucked with variable geometry turbos? I've pulled a few apart on diesels where old guys drive them and they get clogged with diesel dust then stop working, there not stupidly complex. Would be a great option on a performance car.

Are they similar to the VVT turbos that Porsche are using in some of their cars?

Most VTG turbos aren't made of materials which will tolerate petrol EGTs, let alone if you are going to use the car for racing etc. Garrett is interestingly enough bringing out a range of gasoline friendly VTG type turbos along with dual stage compressors and axial turbines - probably the biggest deviation in petrol powered turbo technology since turbochargers have started being used on cars. It will be interesting to see how they go, what they cost, and when they become available.
