AE86 Speedo not working

Postby 86 Power » Wed Mar 24, 2004 11:06 am

My speedo has never worked since I got the car. I have tried to find the problem by process of elimination.

The dash is functioning, the cable is complete and operational, the connection of cable to dash is good. The box gear turns when the wheels turn so its ok.

The part that doesn't seem to be happening is the connection of the cable end into the spindle thing at the box. I think the key is not engaging.

I have tried to add a washer with a slit out of it to pull the cable further into the box to help it engage, but that hasn't helped.

Is there a piece missing or something?

Did you ever find out why it wasn't working as mine suddenly stopped working last night. First it went wacky and started going up and down and stuff and then just stopped working all together. The cable seems to be attatched corretly.

Are you being for real? Your speed from the gearbox is not measured by a fuse.... :?

When the needle starts jumping up and down, the speedo gear inside the gearbox is skipping a tooth. It is either because the clkip that secures it in places has come free (happened to me) or the gear has been stripped. It is only nylon. Pull it out and take a look, only one bolt. May need to replace. Would pay to change your gearbox fluid also.

well it happen to my s14 silvia when the fuse went off, the speedo and tachometer is not moving... :D so i am just guessing it could be the fuse as the speedo meter is not getting reading as it is not powered...
