how to change thermostat on gze

I think my thermostat is not working (stuck open) and I had a look at how hard it would be to replace.... the next hing that came out of my mouth shouldn't be mentioned.

Would I be right in thinking that ive got to basically almost take everything off so i can get the supercharger out of the way just to change the bloody thermostate?!

PS i've had the sc off b4 and it was a c**t of a job
PPS its in a rwd car so maybe i little easier.

I had my thermostat changed by Midas ... who are usually a bunch of garage-trained grease monkeys. Doubt they had to take the s/charger off ... coz these particular guys didn't even put the radiator cap back on properly after a service

Mine is fwd though ...

Np you would be wrong in thinking that the s/c has to come off as the thermostat is mounted on the top of the gearbox in a seperate housing and very easy to replace just get a genuine thermo and rubber ring as aftermarket ones are crap!
Take care to fully bleed air out of system before putting radiator cap on.
Cant remember exactly but it might be easier to remove airbox to access it if you still have airbox and not a pod.

on top of the gearbox? ok now im confused. the engine is in my ae86 so obviously not the standard gearbox.

Ok depends on how good the install is, if a rwd waterpump housing has been used it will be in behind the waterpump and otherwise the engine has no thermostat or housing as it was on the gearbox in fwd form

ok ur thermostat should be on the housing, on the front of the engine from were the hose goes to the top of the radiator,
just depending on how your set up is of course,

on a fwd gze they sit above the gearbox..
plumbing from memory should be from the bottom of the radiator top the water pump inlet. from the top of the radiator to the thermostat..

as for the s/c and intake u should have to touch it.

Its got the pump off my old "rwd" bluetop (it was new) and by looking it seems like the housing wont be able to be taken off because the sc is too close to it.

ie i can see it but cant get to it/take it off.

I can take a picture but i need somewhere to host it.

At first it had the standard radiator which wasn't efficient enough, motorway driving would get it to the point where it was just over its operating temp so didnt like to idle.

Now its got a much bigger radiator and it gets cooled too much, but this should be controled by the thermostat, so either its got NO thermostat or its just stuffed ... thats where i've run into the problem of how to get to it and test it.

if engine oil is too cold it doesnt lubricate properly. also engine parts are designed to expand as they heat to create tolerances and clearances such as pistons and the like. lots of physics and chemistry bullsh!t that i dont reallly understand but can be bad for engine
