AE101 Air Intake Ideas

Postby phat_levin » Wed May 05, 2004 4:21 pm

looking at my intake system the other day i noticed 3 right-angle turns in the pipework leading up to my filter box which can't be very efficient. ive seen cold air boxes installed in place of the battery but i was wondering if any1 has done anything different that doesnt involve moving the battery as that would be a hassle....????

There is a resonator in front of the front left wheel that connects to the intake pipe. If you take it out you might be able to direct air through there.

yeah honestly that pipe is useless, i pulled mine out the resonator is easy to get rid of too (well sorta) u an either leave th box in ther and get a panel filter and just run some pipeing thru that little hole, or ya can do what i hope to do and mount the pod where the resonator used to be

In my car I have used a K&N panel in the factory airbox and will be using 3" ducting for the entry to the air box (doing away with factory piping with 90° bends)

The ducting will come form the front left gaurd by going through the hole to the intake resonator. The hole will need to be enlarged.

in my one, i used some left over piping from my supra intercooler piping that i had lying round (no matt, different stuff to what your getting) and ran a custom pod to just behind the battery, need to take out the resonator and get some desent air feed through there, but getting there.
btw, thats on a 4a-fe in a ae101 5 door liftback, but engine bay is basically the same.

I got my intake done by cr1mnl on this forum.

Factory airbox and piping removed, factory induction pipe (from airbox to throttle body) replaced with aluminium (I think its alu anyways :P), pod filter, flexi-pipe running from inside the pod filter to just behind left headlight, and heat shielding blocking the whole set up off from the rest of the engine bay.

Awesome work, excellent price ... definitely recommend him if he's still doing the work.

Will try to get a pic and post it up somewhere for ya's =)

FREE POWER!!!
Don't discount the benefit of the factory resonator.
The engine suck air into the cylinders in lots of short bursts - this means that resonance plays a BIG part in how much air gets in and so how much power is produced.
Do a google search on intake resonance or resonators. There is a lot of dyno results that show resonators help power.
If you rework your air intake make an effort to have a resonator in there somewhere. The bigger the better. Also (I'm sure you will) give you engine some cold air to breathe.

Ive got a 2.5' pipe from the intake hose which runs down into the front left guard through the hole where the fact resonator is below. So the pod sits in the cavity of the FL guard. Its a tight fit but can be done without relocating the battery

Trying to fit the intake pipe between the battery and the side of the engine bay so you can get it down into the front bumper cavity.

This is true to some extent, and the resonance/resonator only has to be behind the filter (between filter & engine) (doesn't matter whats infront as the filter will only cause a restriction anyway - even if it's minimal)

And, Resonators only play a part on NA engines.

This is what I did in my AE101 FXGT I think the engine bays are pretty similar had to slightly enlarge the hole in the guard to make the 3 inch ducting fit and move the battery and the radiator bottle over a bit, but it works well for $20 piping (3m's) and $5's of sheet metal.

It gets its cold air from just above the bottom of the bumper and for on the track I take out the spot light and the ducting fits over the hole perfectly!
