Postby ELOK » Fri May 07, 2004 7:02 pm

hey all, im lookin at getting more power into my car, is there anything i can do to my 3k to give it more power? i dont wanna spend thousonds or get a new engine yet, just some more pep!
anything simple i can do?

i am VERY engine mod illiterate so these may sound stupid

can you get a bolt on supercharger or anything like that? i think ive seen them around?

good re bulid woud be good or find a 4k and slap a 3k head on it for good compression
then find some twin carbs and extractors and a cam

you can get a re-ground cam for stuff all these days

You're never gonna make big power out of a 3K, best bet is to track down a 5k and put that in (hey theres no substitute for cubic inches  )
Cam grind and decent carb is also another option, but you'd be lucky to top 60hp with a 3k with that :?

yea im looking for alot of power, just a bit more, is there anything cheap and simple i can do? i was told a pod filter would help quite a bit, but i dunno how reliable my sources are. if so then whats involved in installing a pod filter?

Er, you can get a Ramflo type filter, its simple as and probably will gain you 2kw or so. Extractors are the best option, then do the cam, carb and a bit of porting.

ye some of my mates with thier old starlys and corollas did just the basic mods and they went a fair bit better, find some nice extractors mandrel bent ones if possible (dont know how effective pressbent coby ones are) exhaust maybe but doesnt need to be big being a small motor 2" a little ramflo air filter which is cheap as and piece a piss to fit a cam seems to be everyones next step or regrind one. also the sr coupes came with 4k engines and had factory manifolds with twin carbs so if you want to keep it simple and keep everything easy bolt on possibly look for some of these. but if you see one advertised buy a 5k although not to many round anymore so 4k would also be a good start plus the same mods and you will have a good increase in grunt

thanks for the advice people.

i have no idea what half of that stuff is, except the air filter the manifold and the exaust. lol i will get my mate to translate for me.

i dont think i would buy another engine just yet, as this is my first car and im still only on a restricted licence at 18 years of age, so i figure running around in a small engines car for a while will get my insurence rating up.

when i do get a new engine im gonna go for something a bit different if i can. i'd love to do a rotary (i know thats not different) but ive heard they chew thru fuel like a bastard!

peace.

heres what you do.. put on a 2K head, no air filter, and tape the mechanical secondaries open on the carb... put a free flow muffler on the end if you really want to but dont make the piping any bigger... if you do you will lose all of your low end power and only gain a really small amount up top.. which isnt really worth it in my opinion..
as someone else was saying.. try track down a 5K from a liteace or even a 7K then put your 3K head on that and it should make some descent power.. twin carbs are getting pretty hard to find these days.. at a reasonable price anyways.. good luck

Yep
probably a cheaper, more economical and more reliable alternative would be a 4age out of a fxgt or the like.

but at the moment if you just want to tweak the 3k then whats been said above should start you off

there's a 5K at mangere pick a part, or there was yesterday. first one i've seen, it was in a corona stationwagon i think but i looked at a lot of cars yesterday so i'm not sure.

probably be the cheapest way to increase power and would pretty much be a straight swap.

this would work out cheaper than supercharge/pod filter/exhaust/ almost anything to do and almost anyone who knows much about cars could do most of it.

cheers
Matt

throw the original carb away and bolt on a smallish Weber off a 1300cc ford escort /1600cc cortina. a real easy modifcation to do and you get manual secondaries, and none of the unnessesary vacuum crap that the stock carb has.

oh i also have a set of 3k twin carbs and manifold in the garage if you wanted to go that way. the weber carb would be better if you had a few mods first.
