anyone tried motor up?

Postby deaf_rattle » Mon May 10, 2004 11:36 am

I saw the infomercial for motor up the over day, and i thought if thats half as good as they make it sound then it should be pretty good.

But if it is that good then surely everyone would be using it?

The reason i ask, is that my 5mge is getting abit old so i was thinking about giving it a treat for its good service.

I mean i thrash the shit out of it and its still going.

IS motor up worth buying?

cheers

it might help dissolve the boat anchor so you have a reason to replace it ;)

might wanna look into the XIR or what ever it is...

compare and choose... but infomercials are designed to make you think its the best thing snice sliced cheese :P

MOTOR UP

Postby GEOFF » Mon May 10, 2004 12:57 pm

No, motor up is no good.

The active ingredient in motor up is teflon, (pfte). Teflon additives have proven to actualy DAMAGE engines after long periods of use.
This is because it pushes the oil ehd film (which stops metal to metal contact off the moving surfaces. Yes you may get a performance increase to start with, but once the pfte particals go into your oil filter, they dont come out.. They are too big to pass through.

On one of the motor up adds they use a masport motor, and run both engines without oil, one with just motor up.

Masport did a independent study under the same circumstances, for the same time.. then pulled the engines apart for inspection. The result.. damage to the main bearings on the Motor up engine!!

Theres no such thing as a mechanic in a bottle, all the additives you need are in your oil. Theres a fair amount of info on this on the net.

basicly if all these 'miricle' formulas were anygood then oil companys would put them in the oil in the first place

i thought it had metal fragments in it or something so it will like get rid of all the gunge in the engine

its like that engine flush stuff like spt its actualy just desil and you pay $12 for 500mls

nope

Postby GEOFF » Mon May 10, 2004 3:58 pm

nah different, its teflon. And most engine additves that you buy seperatly to your oil are just seperate ingredients that are allready in the oil. That engine flush isnt recomended either.. can root big end bearings.

Damn, I thought about buying it once (late night, credit card, itchy telephone finger) glad I didn't. I almost bought some flying lures as well.

I am obviously not too smart at 2 in the morning

motorup is false

Postby TRDmod » Mon May 10, 2004 5:02 pm

well, principle wise motor up is genius, but aplication, apprenlty an american study showd that yes it deos reduce sound, and theoretically it should reduce friction and apprently it does at the start but like geoff said, there has been adverse effects....also, in american they are not allowed to sell motor up anymore cos they got sued...and lost:S so they cant advertise it for that anymore in america, but everywhere else they can

if you want to you can use it for one oil change and flusht he engine, then dont use it again
jsut to help clean it, but then again, WYNNS flusher is really good, might as well buy that for half the price

8O thats a new one about the big end bearings with engine flush
ive always used minimal amounts ive even used it then stripped the engine down to see how good it was and it defenitly cleaned the gunge all off which was excelent
i spoze if you used too much it would have a wash effect and could do some dammage aye
i limit the use of it and dont drive it just idle for 5 mins then drain it and its all good

peace

I don't know about all this....

I've tried pretty much all the products mentioned so far... and I've had a total of zero problems as a result of using them... Used motor up in a 2E for a couple of year... worked well, never did any damage, made the car run a little nicer...
Using X1R in my 4A-GE and find that it's okay. Runs a little better too... wouldn't say miracle in a bottle...
And as for the engine cleaners... i've always used them... so far nothings died on any of the cars involved (2E corolla, 4A-GE AE85, B5 Familia, CA18-DET 200SX, 1.6L Sentra).
So unless you've tried it and found these things out first hand, I wouldn't take them as lore. Just a guide as to what can happen...

I don't claim to know everything... That doesn't mean it isn't true....

Like everyone has said, I've heard bad things about Motor Up as well.
What I DO recommend, is STP Engine Flush.
Buy some, pour it in your oil and let it run for about 15 mins. In an already WARM engine. :)
Keep the RPM up around the 2k mark and do NOT go driving with it in your engine.
15 mins later, drain the oil. When I drained it, there were big thick BLOBS of oil that came out! Nasty!
Chuck in some new, good quality stuff, change the oil filter and for best results, repeat after 6-7k km's.
About comin' up time for me to do it again, chucking in some Amsoil this time :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
