Postby DORI_86 » Thu May 13, 2004 12:54 pm

as topic says. What do you other 86 "pilots" use. Im in need of some new pads for front. Car is daily driver but also be looking at some upcoming trackdays, drift meets etc. any suggestions? i was thinking about using some EBC greens? oh yea and what brand/type of brake fluid too?

Mintex M1166
Will probably change fluid to ELF stuff mentioned in the info from racebrakes dudes (top of the forum).

Works well.. been to Piha, no fade, went to january 02 track day, ~15 laps no fade... plenty of stopping power, even from cold for road use...

For more road like car try the M1144... supposed to be better for road duties...

Car:
AE85.5
4A-GE (88kW stock with 2in exhaust)
AE86 front brakes/suspension etc
TE71 disc rear/suspension
195/50-15 Toyo Proxes T1-S Front and rear
Stripped of all interior rear of drivers seat
Fibreglass bonnet

That's what I was running... I've since improved but it'll give you an idea as to what I was running and how I found the pads...

I use 1166 on the road with no worries at all.

Good performance cold (better than the road pads they replaced in fact)
Great performance hot.

Mintex 1166 ay.....they sound pretty good, and seem to be quite popular. By the way, what are they like in terms of brake dust. I find a lot of performance pads produce a lot of dust under load. EBC's seem to produce much less....but who knows? Im inclined to lean towards some 1166's now, but how much do they cost (incl labour, machine disc etc) and who does them? i've only got about $400 to spend :?
chea for the replies guys, keep em coming! :D

Can't say how dusty the 1166 compound is... I've got black wheels!

You won't get a genuine "race" pad for $65... you get what you pay for.

There is a reason that Mintex, Hawk, etc cost good money.

You might be getting an uprated road pad .... I'm not saying that there is automatically going to be something wrong with these Ferodo pads. If you are racing, then spend the dosh. If you're on the road, then you should get away with road pads.

im running db308 ferrodo gt11 pads in ma 20v they cost $44 at repco
they maybe ok as a road pad i was told they were a track pad
but have since found out it is what they sell the boy racers because
they are supposed to work well for short distance braking
(between traffic lights) im now waiting on the arrival of my mintex 1166
pads from race brakes sure they are dearer but they are built for the job

chea for the feedback guys! :o all good. These mintex 1166's sound pretty good.....but i still need to know how much im looking at $$$$? just a ballpark figure :D i guess with brake pads its a case of trial and error. What you reckon about braided brake lines? worth the money? any more replies much appreciated....maybe we could extend this topic to suspension and clutch setups and what you guys use and find works best? im pretty sure its already been covered before, well suspension anyways, but yea i been needing a clutch upgrade soon sooo.......ideas??

I have a ferrodo race pad and have used the mintex1166 pad
they both would never fade but the mintex had a lot more stopping power
worth the money and they last a long time as well.

Frodo was a hobbit....
Ferrodo --> frodo....

Sorry bad jokes....

Yeah that price was from Racebrakes in 2001... probably a little more now not sure, I'm due for a set come end of the year so I guess I'll find out then... If you've got your old brake pads, or any old set, then you can save around $50 by providing them to racebrakes... that way they don't just get a couple of sets to wreck for backing plates....

chea for the info "stealer of souls" :) i went in and talked to the guy at racebrakes the other day. Really helpful dude, gave me a a few sheets of info on brake upgrades and what it all means etc. Very interesting read, i recommend to anyone contemplating an upgrade. Concise and to the point with good comparisons. I am going to go ahead with the mintex M1166 pads and Elf fluid. AS you said before he needs either backing plates or a set of old pads. Problem is i dont have a set of pads! so to save me $50 does anyone have a set i could borrow??....please! :D
