Blown Diff ?

Postby z|gen » Thu May 20, 2004 12:57 pm

hey guys
today while welding my exhaust onto my ke30, i noticed that the diff had 2 holes in it, like something had ripped through, only thing i could assume from this is that my diff has blown, if it has, what damage will it have done to rest of my driveline, and what will it do if i leave it to long,
if i was to put a new diff in, what could be stronger that blow again..?

cheers David

As in holes in the casing? You sure its not the drain and fill holes without the plugs in them?

Have you driven it? You'll definately notice if your diff has blown! (ie it wont move! or make horrible clunking noises)

Umm, not sure if a KE70 diff will fit, try that or a late KP61 diff.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

its definatly not the diff plug, something has definatly ripped through or out of there..
when you mean it wont move..do you mean the car wont drive at all or the wheels wont spin ?

either or, usually you wont be able to get drive to the wheels because all the teeth have been ripped off the spiders, but it sounds like your one might have imploded rather violently to do that sort of damage

If you had blown the diff there would be a big loud thud every time you accelerated or relesed the clutch to drive, or horrible grinding noises coming from it.
I dont know about toyota diffs but If you take the casing off it should be easy enough to tell if anything has gone in or out of the casing

hmmm this is going to be interesting to prove, does the inside wheel squeek round tight corners? the fun way to find out is to rip a doughy, if the car can turn around the front wheels instead of just tracking them then you have a locker

could have blown, and then been welded up by a previous less sensible owner
