Shakey Steering wheel

Postby z|gen » Thu May 20, 2004 5:27 pm

hey guys
took my car out for a drive before, and after i get about above 70km/h the steering wheel starts shaking like mad and vibrating, the only thing i could think which could cause this is that my wheel alignment is out, or would it be caused because of the diff..would different size wheels on the front and back do anything ?

cheers David

You may just need to have a wheel rebalanced, it could have just chucked a weight off while you were driving...

When your alignment is out it will usually cause the car to wander while it's going in a straight line, but not shake...

any idea on how much it will cost to have all 4 rebalanced..i assume the car would fail a WOF for it ?
not that the car is ready for a WOF yet..anyone happen to have a wiring diagram they could scan for me ?

car won't fail a WOF on it.... you don't see the WOF dudes doing more than about 10kmh now do ya?

Balancing I think is/was around 15 bucks per wheel when I last had it done....

If you want a wiring diagram, go to the library and find a workshop manual for your car, they're bound to have one for a KE30 Corolla. Then photocopy what ya need from that! :D

well...the WOF dudes wont go above 50, i know that much..but when they check the wheels for play, they would be bound to find something right..

No there won't be any sort of play anywhere if its a matter of wheel balancing... imagine the wheel as a buckled bicycle wheel if you will... thats the effect of an unbalanced wheel on a car, just not to such a great visual extent!

Any play they look for when they shake the wheels is to find and kind of suspension or steering issues, or to suss out the condition of your wheel bearings. Oh and to make sure the wheels are actually attached to the car proper!

check that the wheel fits on the hub properly, it may need hub locating rings if its at around 70 kmh
