tough AE101 question - knocking noise

Postby marke » Fri May 21, 2004 8:46 pm

Hi all,
now i have a question that may sound stupid but its stumped me and the man from pitstop and my friends. i have an ae101 levin and its making a knocking around the corners. now i thought it was the cv so i took it in and the guy had a look at the 'boot' and said it seemed ok, he didnt look at the joint cause he thought he found the problem... he thinks its the back bumper as you can push it down and it does make a very similar sound. if i dont apply any throttle around corners (but ghosting it like that id have to do it slow to stop it knocking) then it wont knock and also the speed of the knocking is co-dependant on the speed i go around the corner...
has anyone heard of this? or had this problem before?
any help is appriciated.
Mark

sounds like ball joints, if i remember rightly they can only be checked when there is load on the wheels ie on a drive on hoist, they are a very common problem on super strut equiped levin/truenos

cv's make a clicking when the wheel is turned at a decent angle, could be shocks which tend to make a knock knock knock noise when you go over bumps (or push up and down on bumpers) when they get really stuffed or start leaking but you would notice it seeing as your passengers would need sea sickness tablets to ride in your car

Its kinda stupid, but it could be that the wheel balancing weight has been put on the inside of the rim and its knocking on the strut. On AE101s there isnt much room between the inside of the rim and the strut. Happened to me when i first got my car lowered. That would explain the knocking become faster depending on how fast your going around corners.

Otherwise, if you have super strut, could be the ball joint in the front, or sway bar bushes (fr or rr).

im pretty sure its not superstrut? whats an easy way to tell? i think its the cv joint its gotten louder over the last 2 weeks or so.. might just pay to have the suspension checked!

easy way to check is how big are your front brake calipers?
if they have one piston on each side then your car is non superstrut
if they have two on each side then its superstrut

I had a similar sounding problem with my AE111, took it to mechanics, and they couldn't get it to happen.
Turned out it was the Factory strut brace bolts, that attach it to the firewall were not tight enough, after I tightened them the problem vanished, even though Toyota told me it was probably the hub or something else making the noise.

got sick of the noise and took it to Midas today.
found it out it was the left front shock being loose (dunno which bolts) the noise seems to have ALMOST dissappeared but i have to go back tomorow
>>so if anyone else gets this noise have a check of the suspension make sure everythings tight!<<
