3sgte heads.. whos an expert?

Postby Mr Revhead » Wed May 26, 2004 12:36 pm

i have a custy after a cyl head from an st205 turbo.
as these are not the most common thing around i was wondering what else has the same head, are they unique to the 205 or does the st215 etc have the same?
hes been told that the 205 head is better then the 185 one he already has

ST215 is different, but could be made to fit by blocking off the cam timing sensor or fitting an aftermarket ECU to take advantage of the direct fire ignition.

SW20 after chassis 087385 is the same.

Also I believe that 94-97 3S-GE (pre VVT) heads are also the same, the valves and cams may be different, but the basic casting is the same.

Note that you will also require the manifolds as they are not the same as the ST185, and the ST185 ones will not fit.

thanks for that.. i think the difference he was after was the different inlet ports (smaller) and the shim under bucket arrangement. so i assume he realised the manifolds are different!

I have heard that the injector bosses are different between the turbo and NA. Other than that the NA has a different cam cover, completely different intake and throttle body etc. The throttle body and fuel rails are also different between the gen II and gen III heads, and between NA and turbo (side vs top feed). Unless planning a major conversion it would be best to find a s/h turbo head complete with manifolds etc which will basically go straight on to the early model block; you can even retain the CT26 turbo if necessary. I happen to have such a thing in my garage which I could be persauded to part with for the right offer .

Same with the ST215 head, the bosses are for top feed injectors and don't have the extra recess machined in them that the side feeds do.

Also the shimless buckets from the 1zzfe are a better proposition than the underbucket shims. They fit straight on a Gen II head and only require minor machining of the gen III to fit (lower valve spring seats from memory).

They've been fitting them to Gen II's & III's in the states for quite a while now with no problems, common conversion on MR2 turbos which is where I got that info from.
