Mechanical Gauges for oil temp

Postby TRDmod » Mon Jul 05, 2004 2:44 pm

Ok ok, I have asked bout this before, and I was told by some ppl here that a mechanical oil temp gauge, would mean that there is a tube or capillary that comes directly from the oil line back to the back of the meter and back to the oil line again?

Did I understand correctly or did I misunderstand

Mechanical gauges are a lot cheaper than electronic ones
But im not quite comfortablewith the fact that extremely hot oil is in the cabin. And if it ever bursts it will squirt not cancerous oil into my face and eye balls…….now maybe I misunderstood that maybe someone was saying that in the engine bay, there is a sensor and oil line feeds into that mechanically – then the signal sends through to the temp gauge in the cabin.

Someone please explain this to me, though I have asked briefly, I didn’t quite get that clear, because I have seen some gauges, reasonable prices but I think they are mechanical. Are they safe, has anyone had problems?

Im getting an oil cooler, I will have all the fittings but I want the temp to come from the line before it enters the oil cooler – I have to get this fitting that goes in the middle of a line, which there is a place to put the sensor in.

Please give me some feedback
Thanks

Its simple really, if you don't mind risking having buring hot oil come squirting out of a mechanical gauge then go mechanical. If you would prefer not then go electronic.

From what I've read the mechanical ones rarely have problems though.

I'd go electric myself. :)

I was really worried about putting a boost gauge in! i didn't want the line to burst and blow all that pressurised air in my eyeball! 8O

Sorry dude, just bin a dork. I know I not helping but I've bin sniffing gas for the last 10 minutes(incidentally... not on purpose) and feel slightly funky :?

I would go electric as well, or mount a mechanical temp gauge outside the windscreen(is this even legal in NZ?) if your that worried. Also you could make sure you get the BESTEST :D mech. gauge you can find, fit really good hoses/lines. That should get you a little peace of mind :)

as for going mechanical or electric i go mechanical at least mechanical can only be blocked or broken electric can have spikes shorts etc :S and give false readings.

as for oil temp you actually want to get the reading from the sump oil.
i have mine (oil pressure and water temp)out on the scuttle panel (outside windscreen) mainly beacuse they are mechanical and IF they do break i dont get anything in the car.
