Engine weight and Suspension

Postby BigDon » Wed Jul 07, 2004 6:45 pm

I have a AE101 FXGT which Im slowly modifying, Ive just done wheels and brakes and I am now looking at doing the suspension as the back shocks are stuffed and it needs to be done anyway.

However I seriously intend putting a Gen III 3SGTE and 5spd gearbox with a aftermarket turbo and front mount intercooler into the car next year and I was wondering if any one knows the rough weights of a 4AGE with ancillaries and a 3SGTE with ancillaries (no aircon though). Also looking to put the battery in the boot to shift some weight.

Im looking at putting in height adjustable coilovers (Whiteline or TRD), TRD front and rear sway bars and TRD strut braces and new bushes. The thing Im worried about is after shelling out lots of $$ for the suspension it wont be able to handle the heavier engine and Ill have to upgrade it again.

Does anyone have any thoughts / advice?

The weight difference between the 3SGTE and 4AGE is not that huge and to get a good handling ride you will need relatively stiff springs and shocks so the weight difference will not hugely effect suspension. Anyway the beauty of going coilovers is the springs are a fairly universal fit so getting harder springs is no issue and if you get adjustable struts you can adjust to cater for difference without any issue

Cheers for the comments you dont know the actual weights of the engines though do you?

What do you mean by adjustable struts? Should there be different types of coil overs to look for with different features? Sorry havent had much to do with suspension!

If you buy Coilovers that have adjustable bound, rebound, height, and take a standard sized Spring (i.e. 65mm ID as Kings and Dobi have an extensive range available in NZ) then you can change your setup to suit with little drama. from memory a 3SGE is the same or maybe even lighter than a 4Age so a 3SGTE should not be much more maybe 20~30kgs including IC piping etc, also depends on how you intend to do it....W to A IC is gonna be a lot heavier then A to A etc

Don't you believe it.
We've done this exact conversion except with a Gen III 3SGE non turbo.
I can tell you there is a significant weight difference between the 2 set ups.
A lot will depend on which axle/hub combination you choose.

Thanks guys, TRD man, could you give me an indication of what it cost to do the conversion I was thinking $5k approx as I dont have access to trade connections etc.

Who did the conversion for you? As Im also in Wellington and if they have done a 3SGE then a turbo would be pretty similar.

Thanks

BigDon, I did the conversion myself. I couldn't tell you how much the transplant would cost. This was a rally car which cost over 40K to build.
We started with a NZ new 3 door Corolla & a SS3 Celica which we imported from Japan with a tap in the back.
So because we had these available, we chose to use engine, gearbox, driveshafts, dash, radiator, shifter, front & rear brakes from the Celica.
In doing so we widened the front track by 40mm which we then had to reflect on the rear.
Because the SS3 was superstrut, and we wanted to use the SS3 brakes, we chose ST182 hubs and bottom arms which required some mucking around to fit.
We used 40mm Bilstein front struts set up for Celica & TRD rear.

The engine & box themselves were relatively easy to install.
If you want to stop by any time I'm happy to tell you what we did & what we did wrong.
I'd post a picture of the car in action but I don't know how.

cheers
Bruce
