ae101 trueno gt apex electric window fault

Postby agrath » Mon Jul 19, 2004 7:16 pm

Hi all,

I have a 1992 Toyota Trueno GT Apex.

My drivers side electric window recently just stopped working, won't go up or down. Passengers works okay though.
My battery is a bit on the dead side, and when I operate the drivers window the headlights visibly dim (even when the engine is running), the passengers side doesnt do that. On either window I can't hear any relays clicking.

I tried to take the door apart but got stuck on the plastic surrounding the door trim. I asked the previous owner if she ever got the trim off and she said yes, and gave me instructions on how, I will try those shortly...

She also said around December 2003 the same window stopped working for her, she got it fixed by a mechanic who reportedly replaced the regulator inside the door.. and i have no idea what that is...
Anyone experienced similar problems? If the 'regulator' has broken twice is it likely something else is causing it to do so?
Is the regulator mechanical or electric?
I suspected a switch that indicates the window position to be be broken or something similar but that wouldn't explain why it wont move in either direction.

Suggestions etc would be great, the sooner the better. I'd really like to have working windows again (My old car had a broken drivers electric window also, this is one of the reasons I decided to upgrade)

Toyota regulators are really really shit. Mine broke and im yet to replace it. Give Mr Revhead a pm and give him your chassis and build numbers from your car and he will get you a price on a new one :)

Basically its the mechanical armature that fails, well thats what happened on mine anyway. Pic below

Thanks Al. Was the regulator pictured from an electric or manual window?
I still haven't managed to get the door apart (see my other post) so until I do this, I won't contact the person mentioned to get a spare. I want to confirm it is indeed the regulator and not something else first..

you'd be suprised what a tiny bit of lube will do. My windows were slow as and just put some in the groove in the rubber seal on the door where the window slides up and down and its much much quicker.

However if its stopped then doh, you'll prob need the regulator as Al mentioned

ur window reg wont look anything like the one pictured above. it will be cable driven. they tend to fray and tangle up. if the lights dim when u try to use it the motor is still trying to work so it sounds like ur reg is seized up. i think that model has red plastic clips that hold the ends of the cable to the reg that break, so it's either that or the cables is broken/tangled. the only tricky bit in getting the trim off is the door open handle. remove the screw from the centre of it then pull it out as far as u can and u will see 2 rods attached to the back of it. they r held in place by L-shaped plastic clips. unclip them from the rod and pull the rods out of their holes and the handle will come away. the rest of the trim, undo all scress then pull like fcuk. :)
meh.....

that is nothing like AE101 setup... they have the handle suround cliped onto two pins at the end it needs to be pressed up and over the pins with a screwdriver to pop it off (sure someone can explane im lazy) and it leaves the lock and opener attached to the door (dosnt need to come off) so no playing with the rods/clips.

hehe try spraying silicone lube down the window runs at either end, run the window up and down a few times. thatll probably cure it, if the cable in the reg is stuffed itll probably fall inside the door!
if it is stuffed give me ya info and ill sort you a new one

my last levin and current trueno window was slow on the drivers side, if you pull the window forward it goes up a lot easier. lubing mine only fixed it for a few days...it used to cut out as well when it was half way up!!

drag it back up why dont ya!

sounds like you need to lube it properly.... take the trims off use some good silicone lube spary, NOT crc and makes sure you lube the runners and the pulleys and where it runs at both ends.

since this has been dragged up
i ended up taking the whole thing apart, and put the motor on a 12v battery and it worked fine both directions
so i put it all back together again and I havent had another problem with my window since.
