engine transplant questions

Postby Huffer » Tue Aug 17, 2004 2:59 pm

Ok, it's been a long time since I visited, and I'm now based in the US.

I have a Toy-mota related question, but it's a bit thorny.

In my possession I have a 1992 1.6L DOHC fuel injected engine inside a Geo Prizm, which I may or may not put into a 1996 RAV4 chassis (both cars are essentially free, and I may want to experiment a bit).

Now I know the RAVs came with 2.0L as a standard(?), but I have a crap body (Prizm) and a bad engine (RAV).

Will this 1.6L go into the RAV4 without any problems mating up?

I haven't got a pic of the engine as yet.

FYI, the Geo Prizm was a GM designed econobox built around a Toyota engine (though which one I'm not sure).

Any help you guys n gals can offer me would be much appreciated.

Thanks! :D

Really need to find out what engines are in those two for us. Dont think many people here would know what engines are in a "geo prizm".

But Rav 4's had a 3sXX engine in them i think, and as toyota didnt make and "s" series block in 1.6ltr's I dont think the engine mounts would bolt up

edit: is geo prizm just a re-branded name for a car here?? ive never heard of them before

prisms are america only i think, they got (of course) 4AFEs. like huffer said shithouse american car based around toyota tech.

ya the rav should be a 3SFE like thaphatty said so the short answer is no - it wont go in without any hassles.

Cheers for that, yep I can confirm that the engine in the Prizm is a 4A-FE.

So no go on the odd-ball transplant.
Coolio. :)

Another question, to go slightly offtopic on my own thread...

A family member has an early model 'rolla wagon, it's got a carburettor (sp?) on top and is a 16v, from the faded markings in the engine bay it seems to be a 4A-F?...something, can't read the last alpha.

What bits off a 4A-FE (the Prizm) will fit onto the 4A-F?

It'll say 4AFC. the 4afe will bolt up sweet if thats what you mean. or are you thinking changing the efi off the prizm to the corolla?

Well the 4AFC runs well enough, it's got less kms than the 4AFE.
But the 4AFC has this odd idling issue, you switch the engine off and take the key out, and it keeps spluttering for a few seconds, as if it's starving of petrol (could be a carb. issue?)...

I was interested in which bits would be exchangable, if any, but it's good to know the whole block will bolt up.

Are the AT's compatible? both engines are currently mated to AT's.
