[ae101 4age] alternator whine + fanbelt noise when cold

right, i dont really want to abuse the tech forum since this is my third thread tonight, but i saved them all up...

there's a whine that comes from my engine bay... when the engine is cold, its really obvious, particularly when its also cold outside... ie if i go for a night drive... it doesnt seem to come through on the stereo, so i dont think its my speakers (even when its on or off)...
i'm pretty sure its the alternator, cause it changes pitch when i put the gas on... more annoying than anything...
either way, if its not the alternator, what else could it be... is this whine normal? should i get a new alternator?

I have sounds, but its there even when the sounds are off, and its got a new battery... admittedly factory size, but still new (reminds me i gotta bolt it back down)

I just did the fanbelt, and it makes a whiny screetchy noise sometimes in the morning (which is what it did before i got it changed and has started doing it again in the last few days)... and it also only does it when it is cold... should i get that tightened again

Not enough tension on the alternator drive belt. It is normal to have a little bit of whine, but it shouldn't be excessive. It definitely shouldn't squeal on startup. Adjust the drivebelt tension. Check your other drivebelts for correct tension while you're at it, as they could be contributing to the problem.

Cheers,

Mike.

Yeah, after a while the new belts will need a retention because the expand a bit. Thats why its started doing it again after its been stretched.
