Carib going turbo

Postby howagn » Sat Sep 18, 2004 12:47 pm

I have a white bzt carib you may have seen it round chch. Now im planning to turbo it within the next few months. I was thinking of buying one of the bolt on honda kits as these come with the link ecu. I would get the toyota piggyback system of course. I can get one of these for around 5g. Do you think I should get full JE internals or do you think the factory Black top could handle 6 pis ok. I'm not looking for a huge gain in Hp just for show really. Then next year for the full rebuild with JE forged internals. I have about $8000 to spend. What are your thoughts. Or do you think I should just go the NA way with new cams etc?

You'll need lower compression pistons at the very least. Or a thick haed gasket. The fuel in NZ is too nasty to try turboing a high compression engine and expect the pistons or bottom end to survive the resulting detonation...

There's a number of outfits who have donw some nice 4AGTE - Nite Parts and Jade spring to mind. And IIRC Jade Automotive is in Chch...

THe NA way would be a lot easier.

Putting a turbo in a car is pretty hard.....

A lot has to be thought out. Cooling, lubrication, extra wear and tear on engine internals.

The blacktop engine that your has in it is too weak internally to take boost.
If you try to do it tempory now and then do a full rebuild later all you will do is destroy the engine to the point where it cannot be repaired.
The least you will need to do is replace the rods and pistons.
The best way to do this is to use s/h rods out of a silvertop 20V or a late 16V motor, and to just buy a new set of genuine toyota 4AGZE pistons from toyota.
Other than this you will need a headgasket, rod bolts, and possibly head studs to make it into a good engine able to handle boost.
Then it's just a custom exhaust manifold, a new intake plenium, and turbo, intercooler, whatever etc etc.
Wheather you want to run 6 psi or 16psi the mods are the same.

By buying a honda kit will be a waste as there is probably not much out of the kit you can use apart from the ECU ( which will have to be rechipped for a toyota anyway ) and turbo itself.

I very sucessfulyl turbocharged my carib... (its sold aaaages ago - but info here: http://www.alaric.orcon.net.nz - altho that was a Z touring with the much sturdier 7afe engine.

If you are lookin at spengin that much i would get a new engine aye - either stick 4A and get a ZE and built it up or poss 3S - now that would be cool :-)

Just outta curiosity TWSTD how did you get enough air to the top mounted intercooler with out ducting above it in the bonnet? I wouldnt of thought that enough air wouldve gotten to it there. But obviously im wrong as it worked... good effort

It worked, but was by no means optimal. I had ducting from underneath and had the bonnet lifted at the back - altho not when those shots were taken. Ideally front mounting it or water to air would have been a better option :-)

The car drove like a factory turbo tho - lots a low down torque and very drivable.
