I Got No Brakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby Muzzie » Tue Oct 12, 2004 9:19 pm

No kidding, I did that exhaust emissions thing that was advertised on here a while ago, well i did it today, and they used a large dyno on the back wheels (obviously).

When they tried to stop it, they discovered the rear brakes don't go!! The handbrake works fine, so i'm guessing it's prolly not the linings.

I'll have to whip the wheels off and check though, but any ideas what it might be? When the panelbeater did some work on it recently they ripped the front left brake line apart, had to put a new one on, and they bled that corner, but since then it hasn't been the same - would that have anything to do with it.

Thanks

Start by completing bleeding the brake hydraulic system. Then I would remove the drums and check the thickness of the shoe linings, check nothing is broken and check that the wheel cylinders are not leaking. Refit the drum and rotate the drum, there should be some slight drag - if your hardbrake travel is around 4-5 clicks, then your rear brake adjustment is probably okay.

Actually, I'm presuming that you have a drum rear end. If it's a disc brake then you check the thickness of the pads, check the rotor condition, remove the pads and make sure you can push the slides (top and bottom) back and forth reasonably freely. If they're seized you will need to remove the pistons and clean them up and use a light amount of copper coate or similar, then refit them.

Good luck - it's a good thing to have a brake system that's working properly :)

Yeah, definitely drum rear end.

I have MIT tomorrow, so I might get someone to look at it then while I finish my welding assessment.
