Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauges

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Sat Oct 16, 2004 1:17 am

Does anybody still use these? I have an eletrical one but I just found out I cant fit it because the "sender" is too big and it pretty cramped around the Oil Warning Switch (whatever u call it) on the block.

The problem I have with Mechanical Oil Pressure gauges is that I'd have to have an oil line running through the engine bay plus under the dash too. Worse part is it would come from the block right next to the exhaust manifold. Not the safest option really.

So yeah, does anybody still use them or should I just give up.

Plus whats the best option: plastic or metal piping?

We still use these heaps as the electric one have a habit of breaking wires or else the sender's die due to vibration/heat etc. Best bet next to anything hot is metal/braided line. Yes having hot oil inside the car could be a probelm if the oil pressure line leaks etc but I've never seen one leak inside the car.

theres been some discussion on this before. They are still used quite a bit. In my own opinion get the copper line ones not the plastic ones. Make sure it passes through a good grommet in the fire wall and all should be sweet. I have run several over the years and never once had any issue.

In aircraft oil pressure gauges there is a thin metal diaphram in the line as it passes through the firewall. The diaphram transmits the oil pressure to the liquid in the part of the line inside the cockpit.
This means that if there is a break anywhere in the line the hot oil is stopped by the diaphram - therefore the pilot can keep his uniform clean :) oh yeah, it's a bit safer as well.

Wasnt the point of bonnit mounted guages to stop having to pump oil and other substances like that into the cabin of the car?
So why not look at mounting the guage (if you go for a mechanical one) on the bonnit, i know it looks kinda gay and is harder to see but it might be easier to do and you wont have to pump oil into the cabin of the car.

i just machined a bit out of my alterantor bracket and now my bigger electrical oil press sender fits in fine, otherwise use a flexi line, like braided turbo oil feed style and remote mount sender on inner gaurd etc
